Northern Essex Knights' versatility proves too much for Bronx as Broncos drop Saturday matinee

Box Score The Bronx Community College men's basketball team suffered a loss at the Alumni Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Knights of Northern Essex Community College by a score of 96-64. With the defeat, the Broncos lost their seventh consecutive contest, dipping to a mark of 3-14 on the 2023-2024 campaign. The Knights, who lost their first game to Westchester Community College last night, improved to a mark of 15-1 on the year.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, sophomore Matthew Candelaria drained five triples, finishing with a team-high 20 points in the process. He also snatched a pair of rebounds while registering two dimes. Daniel Armstrong put together a strong effort, connecting on nine of his 20 attempts from the floor (45 percent) and finishing with 19 points. He also grabbed eight boards, as well. Herbert Gary registered yet another double-double, scoring 12 points and collecting 12 boards, and James Wenzel added seven points, six rebounds, four assists, and a game-high three blocks in 19 minutes.

Three players scored in double figures for the victors, including Luis Reynoso. Reynoso connected on 11 of his 17 shots from the floor, including four out of eight from downtown, to finish with a game-high 30 points. He also grabbed eight rebounds, tied for the game-high of five steals, dished two assists, and blocked a pair of shots. Darlin Santiago netted 12 points, grabbed five rebounds, and tallied three assists, and Ben Nkwantah finished with 10 points. Edwin SamMBaka was the Knights' leading rebounder with 10 boards.

Northern Essex raced out to an early 9-0 lead in the opening 2:43, with Reynoso capping that early run by draining a triple. The Knights ballooned that lead to 13, 17-4, before the Broncos used a 9-2 spurt over a span of 2:02 to pull to within six (19-13). Wenzel netted five points during that aforementioned run, with Armstrong contributing four. For the remainder of the half, Northern Essex's lead never dropped below double digits, as the closest Bronx would inch was to within 11 points down (32-21). The Knights would eventually take a commanding 47-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Broncos trailed by 20 points early in the second half, but eventually sliced to within 16 (51-35) after consecutive converted baskets by Gary and Armstrong. The Knights would dominate the game from there, though. Inside the final 10:21 of action, Northern Essex never led by any less than 23 points, eventually capturing the contest by 32.

The Knights connected on 44.7 percent of their attempts from the floor for the evening (34-76), while Bronx earned a conversion rate of 33.8 percent (24-71). Northern Essex held a slim 54-49 edge in the rebounding department, while also tallying 22 assists compared to 13 for the hosts. Northern Essex also registered 18 steals to the Broncos' six, and the Knights won the turnover battle, committing just 12 miscues compared to Bronx's 21.

Bronx will now have four days off before returning to action on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will welcome the Wave to the Kingsborough Wave to the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for the crucial CUNYAC contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
