12/6/2023 1:54:00 AM

Box Score Sophomore Taijay Good's jumper at the top of the paint with 12 seconds remaining gave the Broncos' men's basketball team a thrilling 62-61 victory over the Borough of Manhattan Community College in front of over 125 fans at the Alumni Gymnasium. With the victory, Bronx won its second consecutive contest, improving to 2-7 on the 2023-2024 campaign (1-2 CUNYAC). The Panthers dipped to a mark of 4-5 with the defeat (2-2 CUNYAC).

In addition to converting on the game-winning bucket, Good was stellar for the Broncos all night, finishing with a team-high 17 points while tying for the game-high of nine assists. He also snatched five rebounds, while swatting a shot and tallying a steal. Sharpshooter Matthew Candelaria connected on three triples, finishing with 12 points, and Abraham Richter posted a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Versatile standout James Wenzel narrowly missed registering a double-double, scoring nine points and snatching nine boards, and it was Herbert Gary pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds.

For BMCC, Khalil Black scored a game-high 18 points. He also snatched five boards and recorded a game-high four steals. Ysaia Marte added 12 points, eight rebounds, two dimes, and two steals, and Isah Mohammed contributed 12 points, nine caroms, a game-high three blocked shots, and three steals. Finally, it was Jayden Jarrett posting a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Bronx spent the opening 19:17 of the first half with the lead, hitting on eight of its first 11 shot attempts, and going up by as many as 11 (26-15). BMCC stormed back and cut into the Broncos advantage little by little, and the Panthers took their first lead of the evening with 43 seconds remaining in the session when Black converted on a layup. As the teams entered the locker room at halftime, BMCC held a slim 39-38 advantage.

The Panthers held the lead for nearly the entire second half, and looked to be in prime position to pick up a conference victory, holding a 59-51 edge with 5:39 to play. The Broncos, feeding off of the energy of the amped-up crowd at the Alumni Gymnasium, refused to go away.

Wenzel converted on a layup with 4:47 left to pull Bronx to within six (59-53), and the freshman would later drain a pair of free throws to inch the Broncos to within four, 59-55. Then, with 2:52 remaining in the contest, Gary converted on a layup in the paint to slice the visitors' lead to two (59-57). On BMCC's next position, Black would draw a foul. He connected on the two ensuing freebees to put BMCC ahead 61-57 with 2:20 to go. 65 seconds later, energetic Timothaeus Graham would connect on a triple, bringing Bronx to within a point (61-60) with 1:15 to go.

The final 30 seconds of the game featured no shortage of dramatic moments. With exactly 30 seconds left, the Panthers' Ja'Lyn Griffin misfired on a three-point attempt, and the ball was rebounded by Gary, who tossed a pass into the front court to Graham, who appeared to have a breakaway path to the hoop. As he motored towards the paint, he put up a layup, but the shot was swatted away by a hustling Mohammed, keeping BMCC in the lead. The ball was rebounded by black, who fed Jarrett, who was then fouled.

Jarrett would miss the freebee, and it was rebounded by Wenzel, who zipped the ball into the front court, where Graham drove into the paint and converted on a layup that would have given Bronx the lead. The bucket, however, was waived off, as Gary called a timeout in the backcourt after Wenzel had rebounded the ball.

Bronx would finally take the lead following the timeout, as Good drained a clutch jumper at the top of the paint, giving the Broncos a 62-61 advantage, and sending the Alumni Gymnasium into a frenzy. After BMCC called timeout, the Panthers had one final chance to win the game, but Mohammed missed a seven-foot jumper in the paint, and Gary grabbed the rebound as time expired.

Bronx connected on 38.1 percent of its attempts from the floor (24-63), while the Panthers earned a conversion rate of 36.4 percent (24-66). Bronx won the rebounding battle, snatching 46 boards compared to 43 for the visitors, and the Broncos also held a slim 5-4 edge in the swatted shots category. Bronx registered 16 assists, while the Panthers had 15, and BMCC dominated the steals column, swiping 13 to the Broncos' five. Finally, the Panthers won the turnover battle, committing just 10 miscues, while Bronx had 16.

The Broncos will look to continue the positive momentum on Thursday, as Bronx will stay home to play another CUNYAC game, this time against the Tigers of Queensborough Community College. Start-time for that conference clash is scheduled for 7:00pm.
