The Bronx Community College men's basketball team dropped its fourth consecutive contest on Tuesday evening, falling to the Express of Monroe College (Bronx) by a score of 92-69. The game took place at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 6-13 on the 2017-2018 campaign, while Monroe College improved its mark to 6-11.
Leading the way for the Broncos in a losing effort was standout Hector Montano Valenzuela, as he connected on nine of his 22 attempts from the floor to finish with a team-high 21 points. He also snatched a game-high 16 rebounds (include eight on the offensive glass) while recording a pair of assists, blocking a shot, and tallying a steal. Rafael Ruan posted a double-double with 16 points (on 8-of-11 shooting) and 11 rebounds, and Herve Awono and Jeremy Heron scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
In the victory for the Express, Monroe College (Bronx) was paced by Gian Batista's game-high 26 points. He connected on four attempts from the beyond the arc, while also adding four assists and a pair of steals. Jessy Jimenez added 18 points, a game-high six steals, and five rebounds, and Kashawn Middleton recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Taffari Jarvis and Steven Hernandez recorded 11 and 10 points, respectively.
With the game tied at four apiece in the early stages of the first half, the Express' Batista knocked down consecutive three-point baskets to give Monroe College (Bronx) a 10-4 edge. The Express would gradually build its lead, with Monroe going up by as many as 12 points thanks to a 12-2 run during the middle portion of the session. The Express held a 44-36 lead as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.
Monroe College (Bronx) held a 66-51 lead with 9:13 remaining, and would put the game away after putting together a ferocious 11-0 run over a span of 1:35 to catapult to a 77-51 lead. That aforementioned spurt included a converted layup by Batista, a basket by Jimenez, a dunk by Batista, back-to-back baskets by Jimenez, and a converted free throw attempt by Jarvis. The Express would eventually go up by as many as 28 points before winning the game by 23.
Turnovers – and points off those turnovers – turned out to be the story of the game. Bronx Community College committed 30 miscues on the evening – leading to 32 points for the Express. On the other side, the Express made just 16 mistakes – translating to just 13 points for the Broncos. Bronx Community College did shoot the ball well, nailing 40.8 percent of its attempts from the floor (29-71), but Monroe College (Bronx) was more efficient, draining 45.5 percent of its attempts (35-77). The Broncos held a slim 32-29 edge on the glass, while also recording eight blocked shots on the evening compared to two for the opposition.
The Broncos will look to snap their four game losing skid tomorrow evening, as Bronx Community College returns to action against Union County College. The game is set for 6:00pm, and it will take place in Cranford, NJ. The Broncos will be looking to continue their success against the Owls, having defeated them the past two seasons at the Alumni Gymnasium.
