Lions Roar Past Broncos With Late Run

The Bronx Men's Basketball team dropped a thriller last night to the Nassau Lions, who are one of the Region XV's top teams. It was a back and forth game from the tip but the Broncos came up short, losing 78-74. Second year players Kevin Vanderpool, Kevin Pimental, Taylor Foster and Parris Purcelle were honored prior as this was the Broncos' last home game of the year.

Scoring was limited for both sides to start the evening as the game was tied at just 8 points apiece, 5 minutes and 20 seconds into the contest. The teams traded buckets as the first half progressed and with 8 minutes to go until halftime, BCC held a slim one point lead, 19-18. Action then began to pick up and the Broncos took a 34-31 lead into the locker room with them at half.

Nassau came charging out of the break with a 10-2 run, taking the lead 41-36. Despite the Lions strong second half opening, Bronx kept their composure and cut the lead to one point at 47-46, with 13:48 left to play. The back and forth scoring continued and at the midway point in the second half the Broncos regained the lead at 54-43. With 7 minutes to go, BCC stole a Nassaue inbounds pass and converted it to a layup putting them 63-58. The Broncos added to their lead for the next few minutes and with 2:52 left in the game, they looked to be in good position to come away with a victory as they held a 71-63 lead. However, over the next 2 minutes, Nassau put together another scoring run, which proved to be decisive of the final outcome. An 11-0 run, gave the Lions a 74-71 lead with 27.4 seconds left in the game. Despite a late 3 point goal by Jordan Webb, who had 13 points and 7 rebounds on the night, Nassau had converted their free throws down the stretch and were able to leave Alumni Gym with a win.

Kevin Vanderpool led the team with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Taylor Foster recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss moves the Broncos overall record to 15-10 and 10-10 within Region XV with the 2 games left in the regular season.Their next contest will be at Hostos Community College, with tipoff scheduled for 8pm.
