Box Score 11/26/14 – Bronx, NY
The BCC Men's Basketball team fell just two points short in a bid to stage a comeback from trailing by as much as 16 points in the first half, as they lost Nassau CC, 64-62 in a regional matchup. The loss was the second in a row for the Broncos after opening the season 6-0.
The Broncos once again were sluggish in the scoring department to open play. Nine minutes into the game they struggled to just 8 points as they trailed the Lions 13-8. The frustrations continued throughout the half as Nassau extended the lead to 28-12 as the half was winding down. A late flurry by the BCC, however, cut the lead down to 31-20 by intermission.
After halftime, Bronx upped the intensity level and started play on a 14-4 run that brought the team to within one point at 35-34. As play continued in the half, the team was unable to capture the lead, though they kept the score to within 4 points for much of the next 10 minutes. A steal by the Broncos led to a
Brian Berrios layup with 5:36 to go which cut the lead to 3 points.
NCC then started to pull away as they extended their lead by as many as 8 points with under two minutes to play. A put-back layup by
Karius Morris with 1:13 to go brought Bronx to within 4, but it was quickly answered by Nassau with a layup on the ensuing possession. With just 47 seconds left in the game, Bronx had to begin to foul and it looked like NCC would be able to put it away. With under 20 seconds left though, the Broncos showed they still had fight left in them as
Yohan Almonte was able to run the length of the court and get a layup to go as he was fouled in the process with just 8.9 seconds left.
Though the free throw was missed, Bronx found themselves down by 5 at 64-59 as Nassau was to inbound the ball. The team was able to force a Lion turnover and Jatton-Pierce Bias hit a 3-ball with just .3 of a second before the buzzer. The Broncos defended the inbound well and even caused a deflection to set up a possible game tying shot, but Morris, who caused the potential turnover, was unable to gather the ball as time expired.
Lamont Newsome led all BCC scorers with 14 points.
Karius Morris added 13 points and a personal season-high, 16 rebounds.
With the loss the Broncos fall to 6-2 on the year (2-1 within Region XV). The team returns to action on Tuesday, December 2
nd as they travel to Selden, NY to take on the Sharks of Suffolk CC at 7pm.
