Five players score in double figures, but Broncos outlasted by Red Hawks, 70-63, in CUNY clash

Box Score The Broncos' men's basketball team suffered a defeat on Tuesday evening, getting edged by the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College by a score of 70-63. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 1-10 on the 2024-2025 campaign (0-5 CUNY C.C.C.), while the Red Hawks improved to a mark of 2-9 (2-4 CUNY C.C.C.).

Despite the loss for the Broncos, five players scored in double figures, including standout James Wenzel, as he finished with a team-high 14 points to go along with a pair of rebounds. Alexander Romero added 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, and Abraham Richter registered a double-double with 10 points, a game-high 18 rebounds, and three assists. Finally, it was Alexander Hattel and Andi Metaliaj finalizing their nights with 10 points apiece.

LaGuardia was paced by Marq Russel de los Santos, as he scored a game-high 16 points (6-12 FG, 2-2 FT) to go along with four assists and three steals. Travon Lawrence added 14 points, seven boards, three assists, and two steals, and Charlie Hall posted a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Red Hawks raced out to a quick 10-0 advantage just 3:23 into the contest, with Lawrence scoring four points during that opening spurt. Bronx responded with a 10-2 run over a span of 4:59 to slice its deficit to two, 12-10, with 11:38 remaining in the first half. Hattel netted four points during that spurt, including the run-capper.

Bronx continued to chip away until finally tying the game at 22-apiece when Romero converted on a layup with 3:14 left on in the opening session. The teams combined on only one more jumper the rest of the half, as LaGuardia took a three-point edge (25-22) into the locker room at halftime.

LaGuardia led the entire second half, and held a commanding 65-53 edge with just 1:27 remaining, but the Broncos incredibly started mounting a late comeback. Trailing 65-54 with under 35 seconds left, Richter drained a triple to cut the Broncos' deficit to eight (65-57). After the Red Hawks' Frederick Konan missed the front end of a one-and-one, Romero drew a foul on the other end for Bronx. He proceeded to knock down both freebees to cut his team's deficit to six, 65-59, with 22 ticks left. The Broncos eventually drew to within four (67-63) with four seconds left, but LaGuardia converted on three of four free throws the rest of the way to seal the victory.
 
Bronx was more efficient shooting the basketball, connecting on 41.7 percent of its shots on the evening (25-60), while the Red Hawks hit on just 26 of 71 attempts (36.6 percent). The Broncos held a slim 46-43 edge on the glass, but the Red Hawks swiped 12 steals to Bronx's six. LaGuardia won the turnover battle, committing just 10 turnovers, while the Broncos finished with 20, and the Red Hawks had one more assist than Bronx (20-19).

The Broncos will now have a long break before returning to the court on Tuesday, January 7, as Bronx will have another crack at the Red Hawks. The teams will rematch at LaGuardia in Long Island City, NY, with the start-time for the CUNY clash scheduled for 8:00pm.
