Broncos standout Nia Simmons records 24 points, grabs seven rebounds in loss to Monroe College (Bronx)

The Bronx Community College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest last night, falling to the Express on Monroe College (Bronx) by a score of 71-35. The game took place at the Monroe Athletic Complex in New Rochelle, NY. With the defeat, the Broncos have now dropped four consecutive games, and have a 1-12 record on the 2017-2018 campaign, while Monroe College evened up its record on the year at 6-6.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Nia Simmons put forth a hearty effort, as she led all scorers with 24 points on the evening. She also added seven rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Eriadna Rachell Vasquez Bautista also contributed a team-high 12 rebounds, while dropping in four points and tallying four steals.

In the victory for the Express, Briyanna Graham posted a double-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds, a game-high eight steals, and six assists, and it was Tatyana Forde adding 11 points, a game-high 14 rebounds, and three assists. Frances Morales and Ariana Jones added 12 points apiece, as well.

Monroe College (Bronx) set the tone of this game early, putting together a 15-0 run in the early stages of the game to take a commanding 17-2 lead. The Express held a 22-4 edge after one quarter of play, and held a 37-12 lead as the first half ended.

The opportunistic Monroe College (Bronx) forced 19 Broncos turnovers in the opening half, and scored 14 points off those turnovers.

The Express opened the second half on a 5-0 run to catapult to a commanding 30-point lead, and from that juncture of the contest forward, Monroe College (Bronx) never led by any less than 26 points. The Express held a 29-point advantage at the end of the third quarter before ultimately winning the game by 36.

Monroe College (Bronx) connected on 32.2 percent of its attempts from the floor (29-90) compared to 22.5 percent for Bronx Community College (16-71). The Express held a 40-33 edge in the rebounding department, while also tallying 19 assists to the Broncos' nine. Monroe College (Bronx) committed 25 turnovers compared to 32 for Bronx Community College, and the Express swatted five shots, while the Broncos did not record a block.

Bronx Community College will return to action on January 23, as the Broncos will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to battle Duchess Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
