Box Score February 27, 2015 – Selden, NY
Regional playoffs started today and the Broncos hit the ground running, beating LaGuardia 75-71 to advance to the semifinal round.
These teams knew each other inside and out as they had met 3 times earlier this season. It was tough for either team to gain an advantage during the first half with neither team pulling ahead by more than a few points. After numerous lead changes in the first half,
Brian Berrios buried a buzzer-beater three to knot the score up at 33 apiece as the teams entered the locker room.
The game played out the same way for much of the second half as the Bronx continued to fight for control. While BCC was heavily outsized, they continued to drive into the lane to wear out the Red Hawks defense. This game plan eventually paid off when the defense broke with 2 minutes left, the Broncos seized this opportunity and went on a 12-4 run. LaGuardia attempted to draw out the game final minute, coming within 3 points, but in the end the Broncos stayed tough to win by 4.
Berrios led Bronco scorers with 20 points and added on 5 assists.
Karius Morris continued his hot streak, picking up a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
"I'm proud of the way the guys played today" Coach Kelly commented following his team holding their own against the higher seed in the quarterfinals. After the win, the head coach said he was looking forward to the challenge of facing one of the toughest teams in country in the next round.
This win brought their season record vs. LaGuardia to 3-1. Bronx Community College will await the winner of the #1 BMCC vs. #8 Rockland matchup to determine who they will play in the next round of the 2015 Region XV Tournament. The Broncos look to get revenge on the #3 team in nation after the Panthers went on a late run to defeat them in CUNYAC Championship last week. Tip-off for the semifinal game is set for 7 PM tomorrow night, all tournament games are held at Suffolk County Community College.
