The BCC Lady Broncos were winners on the road last night, defeating the defending CUNYAC Champions Queensborough CC, by the score of 70-66. The victory marked the first time Bronx has taken down the Tigers since the program restarted in 2011.
Bronx came out with a hot hand in the first half with a consistent attack and by shooting 55% from the field. The team was led by Hivelize Escobar who had 24 points in the first period. In the meantime, the Lady Broncos held the Tigers to 26 first-half points and took a 41-26 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Tigers would show why they are the defending CUNYAC Champs in the second though, as their efficient scoring slowly chipped at the BCC lead. As the clock ticked down late in the game, Queensborough had taken advantage of the 20 Lady Bronco turnovers to inch closer, and they finally tied the score at 58 with a free throw. Moments later, QCC even took a brief lead with the next bucket.
Faced with letting a 15-point lead slip away, Escobar lifted the team with a 3-point goal to retake the lead for good. Angel Mbamalu scored the next few buckets to keep the Tigers at bay as they went on to win a close conference matchup.
Hivelize Escobar led the Lady Broncos with 36 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Angel Mbamalu chipped in with 13 points, and 15 rebounds. Trisha Toussaint gave a well-rounded effort with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists and a blocked shot.
With the win, Bronx moves up to 6-4 on the season. The team returns to action on Saturday, January 10th as they host the Owls of Union County College in the Alumni Gym for a 1pm tip-off.
