Bronx Can't Catch Tigers

Box Score January 21, 2015 – Bronx, NY

The Broncos saw their winning streak snapped in heartbreaking fashion last night as the team fell to Queensborough 79-77.  Though the Broncos were able to handle the upstart Tigers less than two weeks ago in Bayside, QCC gave the Broncos fits for most of the night at home.

Bronx shot just 33% from the floor in the first half, as scoring chances were plenty but shot just would not fall.  Neither team would gain a meaningful advantage though throughout the period.  QCC held a slim 35-33 lead at the break.

The second half would prove to be more of the same for the Broncos as shooting accuracy continued to be an issue.  With 9:58 left to go in the game, Bronx had fallen behind by 10 points at 58-48.  But with 5 minutes to go, Bronx began to chip away for a late comeback bid.  A steal on an inbound pass, followed by a subsequent layup by Yohan Almonte brought BCC to within 6, 70-64.  The team then cut the lead to 4 at 72-68 on a similar play by Jatton Pierce-Bias

The freshman would fuel the Bronco charge down the stretch as Pierce-Bias hit a pair of 3 point goals, the second of which closed the gap to three points at 77-74 with 1:14 left to go.  In the final minute, QCC would lead by 5 again but a clutch 3-ball by Brian Berrios with 40.7 seconds left gave the Broncos a chance.  With Bronx down by just two, QCC committed a turnover on the ensuing inbound and BCC had the ball with a chance to tie the game as the seconds ticked by.  Though the team had several shots in the final seconds, capped off by a tough jumper by Pierce-Bias, they were unable to find the bottom of the net to complete the comeback.

Brian Berrios had a team high 24 points, while Pierce-Bias scored 15 to go with 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.  Karius Morris and Esvvi Tavarez had 15 and 11 points respectively.  Karon Williams worked the glass with 10 rebounds on the night.

With the loss, the Broncos fall to 13-6.  They return to action on Thursday, January 22nd as they host the Red Hawks of LaGuardia CC at 7pm in the Alumni Gym.
