Broncos Fall In Quest For Fourth Straight Championship

Bronx Men's Basketball team could not prevail as they were looking to capture their fourth straight CUNY Championship title against Hostos Community College on Friday night.

Hostos got off to an quick advantage, and 5 minutes into the contest, the Caimans netted 8 to Bronx's 2. BCC was led early by Sophomore and CUNYAC All-Star, Kevin Vanderpool. With just about 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Vanderpool made a lay-up to bring the Broncos within two points of the Caimans (14-12).

By halftime, Hostos had extended its lead to 36-27. The Caimans were led by sophomore Rashaan Bailey who scored 9 first half points. Vanderpool tallied 9 points and 6 rebounds for the Broncos midway through.

After 10 minutes of second half action, BCC's Vanderpool scored 14 points and grabbed 7 rebounds as Bronx trimmed the deficit to three. (44-41). Hostos' Bailey earned a double-double with 10 points and ten rebounds halfway through the second period.

With 5 minutes remaining in the contest, the Broncos trailed by 10 (66-56). Although Bronx battled back, they could not overcome Hostos' lead. The contest ended 78-72 with Hostos crowned the 2014 CUNYAC Men's Basketball Champion, ending BCC's three-year championship run.

For the Broncos, Vanderpool scored a game-best 24 points. Taylor Foster scored 15 and pulled down 6 rebounds and CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Abdel Peguero netted 10 points for BCC.

Bronx will now turn their focus to the Region XV Championship Tournament, which begins for the Broncos on Friday, February 28th. Their first round matchup will be against Sullivan County Community College. The game is being held at Brookhaven Gymnasium in Selden, NY, with tip-off scheduled for 3:15pm.
