Box Score 1/24/14 – Bronx, NY
The Bronx Men's Basketball team was victorious last night in a CUNYAC matchup vs the upstart LaGuardia Red Hawks, 81-73. The win was the first against the brand new LaGuardia team in the Alumni gym.
Stephen Wilson led the Broncos with an all-around effort of 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.
Kevin Vanderpool added 18 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Abdel Peguero netted 17 points while
Brandon Bermeo had 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks on defense.
Similar to the Broncos win vs the Red Hawks in December, the teams were evenly matched early. Though scoring was sluggish for both teams to start the 1
st half, the Broncos held 18-12 point lead 10 minutes into the game. LaGuardia battled back though to briefly take the lead with 4 minutes to go 29-27. The Broncos then cashed in on several scoring chances in a row to retake the lead and at the half, the score was 39-32.
In the second period, the Broncos led by as many as 11, but the Red Hawks exchanged buckets right along with Bronx for most of the half. With 6 minutes remaining in the game, LaGuardia cut the lead to as little as 4 points. From there, BCC then extended the lead to 11 with under 90 seconds left on the clock, but LaGuardia wouldn't go away. A LCC 3-point goal and an easy bucket off a steal cut the Bronco lead to just 6 points at the 50 second mark. But then the Red Hawks had no choice but to give fouls and Bronx was able to extend the lead and run out the clock for the 8-point triumph.
With the win, the Broncos bring their overall record to 13-6 and 7-6 within Region XV. The team returns to action on Saturday, January 25
th as they take on Rockland CC in a re-scheduled matchup from a weather cancelled home game on December 10
th. Tipoff is at 1pm in the Alumni Gym.
