The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) awarded its most prestigious honors – the 2022-23 Scholar-Athletes of the Year – at the 36th Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at Terrace on the Park in Queens, NY last night.

In a tradition that began when the conference was first founded in 1986-87, the CUNYAC annually recognizes four of its graduating student-athletes, rich in both academics and athletics, as its Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Representing Bronx Community College were Honorable Mentions Jordy Leon, a member of the institution's men's soccer team, and Luis Roman Sanchez, a competitor on the school's baseball squad. Athletic Coordinator Faith Rowe spoke glowingly about the Broncos' two honorees.

"I am extremely proud to see Jordy and Luis get recognized for their stellar efforts in the classroom," Rowe said. "Here at Bronx Community College, our student-athletes juggle a plethora of tasks. Many of them compete on our teams while working multiple jobs and balancing the demands of academics. Our two honorees this evening truly did a wonderful job of representing our student-athlete body, and I am confident that they will continue to prosper following graduation."

Jordy Leon, a Computer Science major at Bronx, owns a cumulative GPA of 3.0. One of only six Broncos to appear in all 12 of Bronx's matches this past fall, Leon provided tremendous leadership as a sophomore, registering three goals and earning seven points overall while leading the team with 28 shots.

Luis Roman Sanchez has been a staple of the Broncos' baseball team over the past two seasons. Sanchez owns a cumulative GPA of 3.351 as an Accounting major. This season for Bronx, he was one of only four Broncos to appear in every game, tying for second on Bronx in runs scored (25), third in RBI's (20), and second in triples (three). He was also eight-for-eight in stolen base attempts.

The four student-athletes to earn the distinct honor were BMCC's El Hadji Gaye, Queensborough's Valerie Muse, Hunter's Robert Novo and John Jay's Katie Healy. In addition to recognizing our four Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the CUNY Athletic Conference honored 41 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Honorable Mentions along with 21 All-Americans from the 2022-23 athletic year. Each were presented a plaque amongst other trinkets throughout the evening.

The 2nd Annual Eileen Lyons Service Appreciation Award went to Bruce Filosa, who contributed over four decades of service to Brooklyn College and retired from his position as the Director of Athletics, Recreation, and Intramurals earlier this year.

The Athletic Conference Appreciation Award was presented to Baruch College student-athlete and CUNYAC SAAC President, Julia Cuttone.
