Broncos open 2026 season with loss to Monroe College (JV), two dominant triumphs over CUNY foe BMCC

The Broncos' baseball team started its 2026 campaign this past week. This past Thursday afternoon, Bronx dropped its season-opener to Monroe University's JV team by a score of 16-8, with the game getting called after five innings due to darkness. Two days later, Bronx bounced back in a big way, sweeping a CUNY Community College doubleheader against BMCC, dominating the Panthers by scores of 29-0 and 15-0 in five innings, mercy-rule induced victories. With that aforementioned output, Bronx is 2-1 to start the 2026 season.

March 19, 2026: Mustangs (JV) 16, Broncos 8 (Five Innings – Darkness)

Despite Bronx's season-opening loss to the Mustangs, the Broncos were paced by veterans Luis Villaman and Jason Espinoza. Villaman registered a pair of singles and two RBI, while also notching a stolen base and scoring a run. Espinoza picked up two hits, including a double and a single, while also driving in a run. Justin Perez Salcedo recorded a two-RBI single, and newcomer Christian Calderon added a single while picking up a RBI and denting home plate once.

Most of the Broncos' pitchers struggled in this one, with starter Albert Melendez getting chased in the second inning after facing just 11 batters, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits while walking three and whiffing one. His immediate replacement, Anderson Puello, hurled 1.1 innings and faced 10 batters, picking up the loss, allowing five earned runs on five hits while walking two. The lone bright spot on the hill for Bronx was Albert Tejada, as he logged two frames, allowing just one earned run on two hits while walking two, hitting a batter, and striking out three.

Pacing the Mustangs was Caleb Galindez, as he led all players with game-highs of four hits (all singles) and four RBI. He also drew a walk, as well. Isaias Batista and Kaedrin Rolle contributed two singles and two RBI's apiece, with Batista scoring two runs, and Rolle denting home plate once. Jonas Paulino registered a two-RBI double while scoring a run, and Jayson Cardona reached base four times, notching a single, walking three times, registering a RBI, and scoring three runs.

Alexander Martinez started the game and lasted just eight batters, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit while walking one and striking out two. Yerik Ricourt struggled mightily but still picked up the victory (1-0), allowing five runs (all earned) while walking four, yielding three hits, hitting two, and striking out one.

Bronx held a 6-3 advantage after two innings of play, before the Mustangs dented home plate five times in the top of the third inning to catapult ahead by a score of 8-6. After the Broncos got one back in the bottom of the frame, both teams failed to produce a run in the fourth, Monroe College (JV) put up eight runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 16-7 edge, winning the game shortly later when the game was called due to darkness after five complete frames.

March 21, 2026: Broncos 29, Panthers 0 (Five Innings – Mercy Rule)

In game one of a doubleheader where the Broncos served as the visiting school on its home field, Bronx registered 10 hits and drew 23 walks, with five Broncos had at least three RBI each. It all culminated in a dominant 29-0 triumph for Bronx, its first of the season.

Leading the way for the Broncos was newcomer Hector Jimenez, as he tripled, singled, drew three walks, scored a pair of runs, and drove in a game-high six runs. Veteran Luis Torres doubled, walked three times, scored two runs, and drove in four, and freshman Lenox Rondon reached base six times, earning two singles, walking three times, getting hit by a pitch, denting home plate six times, and driving in three. Perez Salcedo (double, three walks, three runs scored, three RBI) and Jhouerling Gonzalez (single, two walks, HBP, three runs scored, three RBI, stolen base) also played key roles with the stick in Bronx's victory.
 
On the hill for Bronx, veteran Anshel Novelo (1-0) put forth a tremendous effort in his first start of 2026, tossing 4.1 scoreless frames and earning the win, allowing just two hits while walking two and striking out nine.

Despite the loss for the Panthers, Christopher Toribio and Evan Hernandez reached base twice apiece, with both players earning one single and drawing one walk.

Ronald Loja (0-1) picked up the loss for BMCC, tossing just 0.1 innings and facing nine batters, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on three hits while walking two, hitting two batters, and whiffing one.

Bronx put the game out of reach early, denting home plate 10 times in the top of the first, and tacking on another 11 in the third to take a commanding 21-0 edge after two and a half innings of play. After registering five more runs in the fourth and three additional in the fifth, Bronx recorded the final three outs of in the bottom of the fifth to induce the mercy rule.

March 21, 2026: Broncos 15, Panthers 0 (Five Innings – Mercy Rule)

In the second game of Bronx's doubleheader sweep against CUNY rival BMCC, five Bronx players drove in at least two runs as the Broncos earned a 15-0 win. Rondon earned a single, walk, and a HBP, scoring a run, driving in three, and stealing a base. Torres singled four times, was hit by a pitch, scored a run, and drove in three, and Giancarlo Leon tripled, walked three times, scored three runs, and drove in two. Perez Salcedo (single, HBP, stolen base, two runs scored, two RBI) and Joandy Mateo (double, two walks, two runs scored, two RBI) also put forth tremendous contributions at the plate.

On the hill, Juan Santos (1-0) earned the victory for Bronx, hurling five innings (complete game) and facing just three more batters than the the minimum (18). He allowed one hit, yielded one free pass, hit one batter, and struck out 10.

No BMCC player reached base twice, with Johan Ynoa earning the only hit of the afternoon for the Panthers, a single.

Evan Hernandez (0-1) took the loss for the Panthers, as he hurled two frames, facing 17 batters and allowing seven runs (six earned) on four hits while issuing five walks, hitting a batter, throwing one wild pitch, and striking out two.

After neither team scored in the first inning, the Broncos put up a four spot in the second, nine more in the third, and a run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. Bronx induced the mercy rule after retiring BMCC in the bottom of the fifth.

Up Next for the Broncos

Bronx will return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the Broncos will take on Monroe University-Bronx in an NJCAA Region 15 contest. The game will take place at Flowers Park in New Rochelle, NY, with a start-time of 3:30pm.
