The Broncos' women's volleyball team suffered a tough defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to the Wave of Kingsborough Community College by scores of 26-24, 17-25, 17-25, and 17-25 at the Alumni Gym. With the loss, Bronx slipped to 2-9 on the season (0-3 CUNYAC). The Wave improved to a record of 2-3 on the year, and 2-1 in conference action.
In a wild back-and-forth first set, Bronx raced out to a 19-13 advantage, only to see Kingsborough score six consecutive points to tie the set at 19 points apiece. The Broncos were able to record the next three points to snatch a 22-19 edge, but four straight Wave points put Kingsborough ahead 23-22. Later – with the set even at 24 points apiece, back-to-back kills by
Angelica Aquino catapulted the Broncos to an opening set victory.
Kingsborough finished the second set strong to tie the match at one set apiece. The Wave led 18-17 before scoring the final seven points of the set to win it 25-17. Kingsborough led by as many as 10 points in set number three, and seven points in set number four, before winning both sets by scores of 25-17 to claim the match.
Despite the loss for the Broncos,
Angelica Aquino turned in match-highs of 18 kills and 28 digs.
Lisbeth Guerrero added nine kills, and
Heder Rodriguez contributed 25 assists and 11 digs.
Lissette Dominguez finalized her evening with four kills and seven digs.
In the victory for the Wave, Estrella Bello tallied a team-high 13 kills while also adding four service aces. Desirae Decoo contributed eight kills and 13 digs, and Kinga Kupras had five kills and 10 digs.
It was a very even match statistically, with Bronx holding a 36-33 edge in the kills category, and a slight 76-71 edge in the digs department. Both teams tallied 11 service aces, apiece, and the Broncos also recorded 35 assists to Kingsborough's 25.
Bronx will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will take on the Borough of Manhattan Community College at the Alumni Gym. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
