Broncos Fall to TC3 in Season Opener

3/17/2015 2:13:00 PM

Box Score March 17, 2015 – Yaphank, NY

Bronx fell 7-3 to the Tompkins Cortland Panthers in their season opener on Monday. The Broncos gave up a few early runs then failed to make the most of their opportunities as they left 13 runners stranded.

TC3 got out to an early lead with a 3-run homer and continued to pile on throughout the game. Reigning CUNYAC Player of the Year Ruben Gomez had a rough start to the season but still managed to record 3 strikeouts in his limited time on the mound.

BCC finally broke through in the fourth inning, scoring their first runs of the year off the bat of Yasser Mendez. The freshman ripped a bases-clearing line drive to left field to bring the score to 5-2.

The bullpen trio of Anthony Torres, Albany Disla, and Johan Mercedes looked strong in their season debut. They combined for three hitless innings, while confusing batters to force 6 strikeouts.
Although they were outhitting the Panthers, the Broncos could not capitalize with runners in scoring position. In multiple innings the bases were loaded with 2 outs, and both times they were unable to put the ball in play.

Despite the loss, the team showed flashes of talent on both sides of the ball. With the season opener out of the way the Broncos look to improve upon any mistakes and buckle down as conference play quickly approaches.

The baseball team returns to action with their home opener this Sunday at Ohio Field. Come support your Bronx Broncos as they take on crosstown foes, the ASA Avengers. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
