The Bronx Community College men's soccer team battled Monroe University-Bronx on Tuesday afternoon at Flowers Park, but the Broncos were unable to overcome an early Express surge, falling by a 9-1 final.
With the setback, Bronx drops to 1-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in NJCAA Region XV play, while Monroe University-Bronx improves to 3-2-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Region XV competition.
The Express wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, scoring three times during the opening 15 minutes. Jeffrey Juca netted a tally at the 3:33 mark before Alanzo McGrath doubled the advantage at 12:05. Juca struck again just over two minutes later, giving Monroe a 3-0 lead.
Bronx responded with its lone goal of the afternoon in the 21st minute. David Santa converted a free kick from 25 yards out at 20:22, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and giving the Broncos some momentum midway through the opening half.
Monroe, however, answered before the break. Aliou Diallo scored in the 23rd minute, and Cheikh Toure converted a penalty kick with 9:12 remaining in the half, sending the Express into halftime with a 5-1 advantage.
The Express continued to apply pressure after halftime, adding four more goals over the final 25 minutes. Kadiff Wolfe pushed the lead to 6-1 at 48:27, while Diallo scored his second of the match less than five minutes later. Toure added his second goal at 58:40 before Mamadou Bangoura capped the scoring at 68:26.
Monroe finished the afternoon with a significant advantage in offensive production, registering 32 shots, including 20 on goal, compared with one shot for Bronx. The Express also earned 14 corner kicks to the Broncos' one.
Despite facing constant pressure, Bronx goalkeeper Ramon Caldera recorded 11 saves on the afternoon. Santa accounted for the Broncos' only shot and shot on goal, while also providing the team's lone goal.
For Monroe, Diallo and Juca each scored twice, while Toure also recorded a pair of goals. Toure additionally contributed an assist, while Oumar Barry finished with an assist and three shots on goal.
The Broncos will look to regroup quickly when they return home Thursday afternoon, hosting SUNY Orange at Ohio Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
