Bronx's 2025-2026 season finalizes with 57-50 loss to Kingsborough in NJCAA Region 15 Division III Tournament semifinals

The Broncos' women's basketball team's highly-successful 2025-2026 campaign finalized on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx was defeated by the Wave of Kingsborough, 57-50, in the NJCAA Region 15 Division III semifinals. The games took place on the campus of Suffolk County Community College. With the defeat, the Broncos capped their season at 18-5, while Kingsborough improved to 15-7 advancing to the tournament's championship game tomorrow against No. 1 seeded Monroe University-Bronx (12pm).

Despite the loss for Bronx, veteran Ana Matos notched a double-double in her final game for the institution, netting a team-high 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Angelina Gonzalez, also playing her final game for the team, contributing eight points, seven rebounds, and a pair of assists, and CUNY All-Star Akela Robertson finalized her afternoon with eight points, six rebounds, a team-high four assists, and two steals. Finally, it was CUNY Player of the Year and All-Conference standout Kolonnie Green adding five points, a team-high 11 rebounds, game-highs of nine steals and four blocked shots, and two assists.

The Wave was paced by Aneiyah Alexander in its triumph, as she scored a game-high 19 points while grabbing nine rebounds and leading all Kingsborough players with eight steals. Mariana Richards posted a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals, and Justinna Boatwright finalized her afternoon with 10 points, a game-high 15 rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Finally, it was Emily Pinnock-Jarret registering 10 points while snatching two rebounds.

Kingsborough raced out to an early 8-2 advantage in the opening 3:05 of action, with Richards contributing four points, Boatwright adding two, and Kianny Aristy contributed two. Bronx responded with an 8-2 run of its own over a span of 4:32, with Akira Robertson earning a pair of buckets, Yahannis Martinez adding a hoop, and Akela Robertson capping the spurt with two of her own. The pendulum then swung towards the Wave, with Kingsborough scoring the final eight points of the quarter to take an 18-10 advantage after 10 minutes of action. Richards and Alexander each scored a pair during that aforementioned spurt, with Pinnock-Jarret netting the final two points of the quarter.

After Alexander scored 23 seconds into the second to give Kingsborough a 20-10 edge, Bronx netted 10 of the next 12 points to pull to within two, 22-20, with 6:25 left in the half. Six points by Akela Robertson, sandwiched between buckets by Green and Matos, comprised the Bronx run. Kingsborough went back up by as many as six (26-20), before taking a slim four point edge into the locker room at halftime (28-24).

42 seconds into the third quarter, Alexander converted a three-point play, draining a layup and subsequent free throw, to give Kingsborough a 33-24 advantage. As usual, Bronx refused to let the game get away from them, scoring six unanswered points over the ensuing 2:14 to close to within three (33-30). Gonzalez, Matos, and Destiny Dickerson scored two points apiece during that charge. The Broncos continued to push, eventually taking the lead, 37-35, when Matos drained a triple off a beautiful swing pass by Gonzalez with 2:49 left in the quarter. The teams exchanged the lead three more times, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming when Pinnock-Jarrett earned a bucket at the horn to put the Wave ahead, 41-40.

In the final period, the Broncos took the lead 53 seconds into it, when Gonzalez drained a pair of free throws to make it 44-43 in favor of Bronx. That advantage would last just 14 ticks, however, as Pinnock-Jarret's layup gave the Wave the lead back, 45-44. Kingsborough later boosted its advantage to five (49-44), before consecutive buckets by Green and Matos sliced the Wave's edge to one (49-48) with 6:00 to go.

Over the course of the final six minutes, the Broncos struggled in all facets, shooting just one-for-seven while committing six turnovers. On the flip side, Kingsborough was only connected on three of nine shots (33 percent), but the Wave made enough stops to finish off the Broncos in the waning moments and advantage to the finals of the tournament.

Both teams struggled mightily shooting the basketball from the floor, with the Wave earning a conversion rate of 32.4 percent (24-74), and the Broncos connecting on just 18 of 67 shots (26.9 percent). The CUNY and NJCAA Region XV foes both shot exceptionally from the free throw line, with Kingsborough hitting all nine of its freebees (100.0 percent), and Bronx nailing 10 out of 11 (90.9 percent).

The Wave held a slim 53-47 edge on the glass, while also holding a 22-16 advantage in steals. The Broncos did hold a 15-12 edge in assists, while also swatting four shots to Kingsborough's zero. The teams combined for 54 turnovers, with the Wave committing 25, and the Broncos finishing with 29.

Despite the result not going the way of the Broncos, it still was an incredible 2025-2026 for the Broncos. After staring 7-4 through 11 games of the season, Bronx ran off 11 consecutive wins, including triumphs over Kingsborough (twice), Division II Westchester, and Monroe University-Bronx. Additionally, the Broncos won their first CUNY Community College title since 2016, and earned the No. 2 seed in the NJCAA Region 15 Division III Tournament. Four student-athletes earned CUNY All-Conference honors, and Craig Williams was tabbed the CUNY Coach of the Year.
