Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Broncos hit final nine shots, rally from nine-point deficit to stun Vikings 80-79 in Region 15 thriller

The Broncos' women's basketball team started out calendar year 2026 on a tremendous note, defeating the Vikings of Westchester by a score of 80-79 in an NJCAA Region 15 thriller. The game was played at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the victory, the Broncos improved to 8-4 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while Westchester dipped to 8-4.

The triumph served as a measure of revenge for Bronx, as the Broncos had lost to the Vikings by a score of 93-81 back on December 13.

Six players scored in double figures for the Broncos in what was an all-around team effort. Destiny Davis' 16 points led Bronx, and her 11 assists were also a game-high. Additionally, the standout swiped four steals while collecting three rebounds. Yahannis Martinez played sensationally in her season debut, netting 14 points while dishing six assists, tying for the game-high of five steals, and adding three rebounds. Destiny Dickerson finished with 13 points, two boards, and a pair of assists, and Kolonnie Green put forth another double-double, finalizing her afternoon with 12 points, game-highs of 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots, as well as five steals. Angelina Gonzalez and Ashley Hirado contributed 12 points apiece.

Saniya Bell paced Westchester in the Vikings' defeat, as she connected on five triples, as well as eight of her nine attempts from the free throw line, to finish with a game-high 27 points. She also tied for team-highs of 11 rebounds and four assists. Tiandra Martin finalized her afternoon with 15 points and eight rebounds, and Mariah Mills netted 13 points while snatching five rebounds, dishing three assists, and swiping a pair of steals. Angelica Rios finished with 10 points, seven boards, and three dimes, and Daveya Rodriguez contributed eight points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Bronx raced out to early advantages of 8-0 and 12-3, but Westchester put together an 8-0 run of its own to slice the Broncos' edge to one, 12-11. On Bronx's next two possessions, a drained triple from Davis, and a bucket by Gonzalez boosted the Broncos' advantage to six, 17-11, but a 7-2 run by the visitors once again shrunk Bronx's advantage to a point (19-18). A made jumper in the paint by Green capped the scoring for the period, with the Broncos leading 21-18 after 10 minutes of action.

Westchester took its first lead of the game with 7:07 remaining in the half when Ball swished a pair of administrative technical free throws to put the Vikings up 24-23. In what was an incredibly competitive back-and-forth remainder of the second quarter, neither squad took a lead greater than four points until the final buzzer, when Bell drilled a three-point basket to give the Vikings a 41-36 advantage at the half.

With 7:33 remaining in the third quarter, Westchester took its largest lead of the game (48-40) thanks to a converted freebee by Bell. Over the ensuing 5:10, the Broncos put forth an 8-2 run, courtesy of a pair of buckets by Davis, a triple by Dickerson, and a made free throw by Dickerson as well. That inched the hosts to within two, but the Vikings netted the next five points (thanks to a bucket by Rios, and a made three-point basket by Mills) to go back ahead 55-48. Yahannis Martinez then closed the quarter with two straight hopes to pull Bronx to within three (55-52) after 30 minutes of action.

In the fourth quarter, Westchester held a nine-point lead, 65-56, and Davis had just picked up her fifth foul. Things looked bleak for the Broncos, but Bronx then began a run for the ages. Over the ensuing 4:21 of action, the Broncos outscored the Vikings 20-10, connecting on all eight of their shot attempts during that span. The bucket that gave the Broncos the lead was Hirado's three-point basket with 55 seconds remaining, prompting a Westchester timeout.

On the Vikings' next possession, Westchester would turn the ball over. Bronx would bring it down the court where Hirado would bury another triple to give the Broncos a 79-75 lead. The Vikings would battle back, inching to within one (80-79) with six seconds remaining. Westchester had one final chance to win the game, but Bell's potential game-winning three point shot from the corner was off the mark, giving the Broncos an incredible NJCAA Region 15 win.

In all, the Broncos ended up connecting on their final nine shots of the fourth quarter to capture the victory.

The Broncos earned a conversion rate of 43.1 percent from the floor (31-72). Bronx nailed eight of 17 from downtown (47.1 percent), while also draining 66.7 percent of its free throw attempts (10-15). On the flip side, Westchester drained 27 of 66 shot attempts (40.9 percent), making eight out of 16 trifecta launches in the process (50 percent). The Vikings misfired on 10 freebees, finishing 17-27 (63 percent).

Bronx won the game despite getting out-rebounded 52-36, but the Broncos were the much feistier team on defense, swiping 17 steals compared to six for the opposition. Bronx also held a 7-6 advantage in swatted shots on the afternoon. The Broncos held a 24-17 edge in assists, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues compared to 29 for Westchester.

The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Bronx will welcome LaGuardia to the Alumni Gymnasium for a CUNY game. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
