Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Broncos put NJCAA Region XV on notice with dominant 87-67 victory over #4 Monroe University-Bronx Express

The Broncos' women's basketball team put NJCAA Region 15 on notice last night, defeating NJCAA Region 15 #4 Monroe University-Bronx by a score of 87-67. The contest took place at the Monroe Athletic Center in New Rochelle, NY. With the victory, the Broncos won their seventh consecutive game, improving to 14-4 on the year (10-2 Region 15), while the Express dipped to 20-2 (9-1 Region 15).

In the sensational victory for the Broncos, Destiny Davis continued her stellar freshman campaign, as she connected on nine of her 12 shots from the free throw line, finishing with a game-high 23 points. She also added 12 rebounds, tied for the game-high of four assists, and swiped two steals. Ana Matos, who is back with the club for the stretch run, scored 18 points, collected seven rebounds, and dished two assists. Akira Robertson netted 12 points (4-6 FG). Akela Robertson finished with 10 points, two boards, and a pair of assists, and Kolonnie Green nearly posted a triple-double, finishing with eight points, game-highs of 16 rebounds, 12 blocked shots, and four steals, and three assists.

Despite the loss the Monroe University-Bronx, Aneyah McLamb connected on nine of 20 shots, finishing with a team-high 22 points. Her 12 rebounds and four steals both tied for game-highs, and she contributed two assists, as well. Additionally, Salimah Williams scored 21 points, snatched eight boards, tied for the game-high of four assists, and tallied three steals.

In a very competitive opening quarter, the Broncos trailed 7-4 with 6:14 remaining in the period before Bronx rattled off nine consecutive points (courtesy of three points by Martinez, and a bucket apiece by Davis, Green, and Destiny Dickerson). That put the Broncos ahead by a score of 13-7.

Williams halted Monroe University-Bronx's scoring drought with a basket, slicing Bronx's lead to four with 3:22 to go in the stanza. That hoop kick started a string of seven consecutive points for Monroe that was capped by a triple basket by Beverly Williams, which gave hosts a 14-13 lead with 1:31 to play in the opening period. Three straight points by Davis put the Broncos ahead 16-14. But Lea Tavarez's converted triple at the horn put the Express up 17-16 after 10 minutes of action.

In the second quarter, a driving layup by McLamb extended Monroe's lead to 21-16, its largest of the night at that juncture. Dickerson ended the Express' 7-0 run with a bucket, slicing the Express' advantage to three points. Later in the period, Davis drained a jump shot which closed a 6-0 run by Bronx and put Bronx in the lead, 22-21, with 7:33 remaining in the half.

The remainder of the half between the two NJCAA Region 15 powers featured six lead changes and six tied scores. In what was an extremely back-and-forth opening 20 minutes of basketball, the Broncos took a slim 39-35 advantage into the locker room at the break.

In one of their most impressive, if not the most impressive, quarters of basketball during this 2025-2026 campaign, the Broncos outscored the Express by a margin of 33-19. A converted trifecta by Matos extended the Broncos' advantage to eight points (55-47) with 4:10 remaining in the third. An additional six points from Akela Robertson, and another three from Davis, capped a 13-0 run spurt for Bronx, putting the Broncos up 64-47 with 2:29 left in the quarter.

Later, Akira Robertson drained a triple to give the Broncos a commanding 70-49 hold with 41 seconds left in the period. The Express were able to close the gap and cut the deficit to 18 (72-54) heading into the fourth quarter.

In a low-scoring final period, the Broncos outscored the Express 15-13, going up by as many as 23 points, before going on to capture the impressive victory by 20 (87-67).

The Broncos were by far the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as Bronx earned a conversion rate of 46 percent for the evening (29-63). On the flip side, the Express would drain just 23 of 81 attempts (28.4 percent). The visitors held a healthy 57-48 edge on the glass, while also holding edges in assists (19-12) and blocked shots (13-1). The hosts registered 17 steals to the Broncos' 10, and the teams combined for 54 turnovers on the evening, with Bronx committing 31, and the hosts finishing the night with 23.

Bronx will return home on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will take on the Caimans of Hostos in a CUNY C.C.C. contest at the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm. Prior to the game, there will be a special pregame ceremony, as the Bronx C.C. Department of Athletics will honor sophomores Ana Matos, Yahannis Martinez, Angelina Gonzalez, Alexandra Peguero, and Madison Wade.
