Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Broncos honor six sophomores, then overwhelm Caimans defensively with 31 steals, eight blocks to seal victory

The Bronx Community College women's basketball team continued to roll on Thursday evening, closing out the home portion of its regular season by turning back the Caimans of Hostos by a score of 73-59 in CUNY action. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. The victory, the Broncos' eighth straight since the turn of the new year, improved BCC to 15-4 on the 2025-2026 campaign, including a mark of 8-1 in CUNY play. Hostos dipped to 8-10 (4-4 CUNY with the loss).

Prior to the contest, the BCC Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor sophomores Nancy Boateng, Alexandra Peguero, Madison Wade, Yahannis Martinez, Ana Matos, and Angelina Gonzalez in a show of appreciation for their dedication to the institution's women's basketball program. Each sophomore was presented with an action-shot picture frame and a bouquet of flowers. The sophomores gathered with their coaches and teammates for a ceremonious photo prior to tip-off.

On a night where Bronx's offense struggled and its defense dazzled, four players still scored in double figures for Craig Williams' bunch. Gonzalez was extraordinarily efficient in her final regular season home game, connecting on six of her seven attempts from the floor to finish with a team-high 14 points. She also tied for the game-high of six assists, while grabbing six rebounds, and swiping five steals. Destiny Dickerson added 13 points, and Matos posted a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and seven steals. Finally, it was Destiny Davis posting a double-double with 12 points, a game-high 10 steals, six assists, and five rebounds.

Despite the loss for the Caimans, Makayla Lima scored a game-high 15 points (8-10 FT) to go along with three assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Additionally, Assiatou Traore added 13 points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots, and Maya Morrison finalized her evening with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Bronx raced out to an early 10-2 advantage in the opening 2:57 of play, courtesy of four points apiece from Dickerson and Davis, and a bucket by Green. Later in the quarter, a drained triple by Matos bumped the Broncos' edge to 10 (13-3), but the Caimans used the final 4:15 of the period to even the score, going on a 12-2 run over that span to deadlock the contest at 15-all at the conclusion of the opening 10 minutes. Yuderlis Martinez led the way for Hostos during that aforementioned run with a pair of trifectas, and the run was capped by Lima's fast-break conversion.

Holding a slim 19-17 edge early in the second quarter, the Broncos went on a 12-0 tear over a span of 3:17 to balloon its advantage to 14 points (31-17). Gonzalez led the way for Bronx during that run with six points, including the final bucket. Hostos did close the gap to eight with 26 ticks left in the half, but a pair of converted free throws by Ashley Hirado in the closing seconds of the half put Bronx up 38-28 as the horn sounded on the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Assiatou Traore started the scoring by draining a layup to get the Caimans to within eight (38-30), but a 14-6 run by the Broncos gave Bronx its largest lead of the CUNY clash, a 16-point edge (52-36). Five different Broncos scored during that aforementioned spurt, including Akira Robertson who buried a triple in the middle of it. The closest the Caimans would get for the remainder of the Quarter was 12 points down, but Akela Robertson's long three-point conversion with 14 seconds left in the third bumped the Broncos' advantage back to 15 (57-42). That would be the score following 30 minutes of action.

The apex of Bronx's lead was 17 points, reached when Gonzalez converted on a fastbreak layup to put her team up 62-45 with just over 6:00 to play. Hostos would never trail by fewer than double-digits the rest of the way, as the Broncos would go on to win the game by 14 (73-59).

The teams earned a nearly identical percentage shooting the basketball, with the Broncos earning a conversion rate of 32.9 percent (28-85), and Hostos draining 21 of its 65 shots (32.3 percent). Bronx held a slim 55-53 edge on the glass, and the Broncos dished 21 assists compared to 13 for the Caimans. The Broncos swatted eight shots (all via Kolonnie Green) compared to Hostos' 4, and Bronx's stellar defense was on display all night, as the hosts compiled 31 steals compared to 13 for the visitors. The CUNY foes combined for 71 turnovers (Hostos had 41, Bronx had 30) on the night.

The Broncos will close out their regular season portion of the schedule next Thursday, as Bronx travels to the BMCC Gymnasium for a CUNY clash with the Panthers. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
