Women's basketball team continues incredible resurgence with gritty 74-64 victory over Kingsborough Wave

The Broncos' women's basketball team picked up a colossal victory on Thursday evening, defeating the defending CUNY champion Wave of Kingsborough by a score of 74-64. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the victory, the Broncos improved to a mark of 11-4 on the season (7-1 CUNY), winning their fifth straight game in the process. Kingsborough dipped to a record of 8-5 (3-1 CUNY) with the loss.

Leading the Broncos in their victory was standout Destiny Davis, as she connected on all eight of her free throw attempts, scoring a game-high 19 points. She also snatched 10 rebounds, dished a game-high four assists, and added four steals. Angelina Gonzalez and Akira Robertson netted 13 points apiece, with Gonzalez adding eight rebounds and three assists. Yahannis Martinez finished with 11 points, five assists, two boards, and a pair of steals, and Kolonnie Green posted yet another double-double, scoring 10 points, tying for the game-high of 14 rebounds, swiping a game-high five steals, and registering a pair of assists.

Despite the loss for the Wave, Justinna Boatwright tied for the game-high of 19 points while snatching 10 rebounds, tallying a pair of assists, swatting two shots, and adding a pair of steals. Aneiyah Alexander posted a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of assists, and Kianny Aristy finalized her evening with 15 points, four rebounds, and a team-high four assists. Finnally, Mariana Richards' 14 rebounds tied her for the game-high in that category.

In the first quarter of action, neither squad took more than a three-point advantage, as the period finalized with the Broncos owning a slim 21-20 advantage.

With 5:06 remaining in the half, the Wave held a 30-27 advantage, before putting together a 9-1 run over a span of 2:39 to take an 11-point edge (39-28). Alexander led Kingsborough during that aforementioned surge with five points. The Broncos kept the game close, responding to KCC's spurt by outscoring the Wave 7-2 to end the quarter. Martinez contributed three points during that run, with Gonzalez and Green adding a bucket apiece. After 20 minutes of action, the Wave held a modest 41-35 advantage.

The Broncos dominated the third quarter of play, outscoring the Wave 19-7, and allowing just two Kingsborough field goals in the period. The quarter featured an 11-0 Bronx run at one point, with Robertson contributing five points, Gonzalez adding four, and Martinez adding a bucket. The Broncos held a 54-48 edge heading into the final period.

With 6:13 remaining in the game, a drained jumper by Davis gave the Broncos their largest lead of the game – a 12-point advantage (64-52). An 8-2 run by the visitors over a span of 2:22 brought Kingsborough to within six (66-60) with 3:51 to go, but the Broncos defense was lights-out from there, as the Wave converted on just one out of six field goal attempts down the stretch, committing two turnovers in the process. Bronx's free throw shooting was also stellar, as the Broncos converted on all six of their free throw attempts inside the final 30 seconds to secure the win.

Bronx won the game despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the field (27-81) and 7.7 percent from the three-point line (2-26). The Broncos did shoot exceptionally from the line, hitting 18 of 22 freebees (81.8 percent). On the flip side, Kingsborough earned a conversion rate of 38.1 percent (24-63) and didn't convert on a triple (0-4). The Wave was locked in at the line, connecting on 16 of 22 shots at the stripe (72.7 percent).

The Wave held a slim 49-48 edge on the boards, but the Broncos held advantages in assists (21-17) and steals (15-7). Kingsborough swatted four shots to Bronx's three, and the Broncos won the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues compared to 25 for the visitors.

Bronx will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Selden, NY to take on the Sharks of Suffolk in NJCAA Region 15 action. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
