Broncos put forth strongest effort of season, but come up short against Wave as Kingsborough escapes with 79-71 victory

The Broncos' men's basketball team put forth its best effort of the season on Thursday evening, but still came up a tad short, falling to the Wave of Kingsborough by a score of 79-71. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 0-16 on the 2025-2026 campaign (0-7 CUNY), while Kingsborough improved to 4-12 (3-1 CUNY).

Despite the loss for Bronx, newcomer Bryan Teixeira connected on six of his nine attempts from the floor to finish with a team-high 18 points. His five assists also led all Broncos, and he grabbed three rebounds. Aden Lugo had one of his stronger performances of the year, netting 15 points while collecting six rebounds, and Shamari Johnson finished with 13 points, four boards, two assists, and a steal. Finally, it was Said Martin posting a double-double with 10 points, a game-high 21 rebounds, and two assists.

In the victory for Kingsborough, Milan Harricharan scored a game-high 20 points, while also collecting six rebounds and dishing a game-high six assists. Saquon Roberts netted 15 points, snatched five boards, and added two dimes, and Jesus Rodriguez finished with 13 points, six rebounds, three assists, and a game-high three steals.

Bronx trailed 10-0 in the opening 4:41 of play, and eventually found itself in a 13-point hole (22-9), but the tide would soon turn. Over a span of 6:46, the Broncos outscored the Wave 24-11 to knot the game at 33 apiece. During that aforementioned stretch, Teixeira led the way with nine points, with Lugo adding eight.

After some back-and-forth play between the teams, Tyler Flagg would connect on a long triple to tie the contest at 38-all with 1:29 remaining until halftime. 34 seconds later, Johnson gave Bronx its first lead of the night, converting on a layup to give the Broncos a 40-38 edge. Bronx would eventually take a 41-38 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the teams would find themselves deadlocked 43-43, 44-44, 46-46, 48-48, and 54-54, before Kingsborough would take the lead for good on a long triple by Jaydin Sanchez, as the Wave snatched a 57-54 advantage with 8:35 remaining. Over the course of the final 8:35 of action, Kingsborough would keep the Broncos at bay, allowing just four Bronx field goals down the stretch, eventually winning the game by eight (79-71).

The teams almost earned an identical shooting percentage, as the Broncos earned a conversion rate of 37.5 percent (24-64), while the Wave connected on 26 of 70 attempts (37.1 percent). Both squads shot under 60 percent from the stripe, with the Wave draining 23 of 39 freebees (59 percent), and Bronx connecting on 20 of 35 (57.1 percent).

Bronx and Kingsborough were deadlocked at 48 rebounds apiece for the evening, but the Wave held advantages in assists (21-14) and steals (6-5), while the Broncos held a 3-2 advantage in swatted shots. Turnovers were at minimum all evening, with the Wave committing just 10, and the Broncos finishing with 13 miscues.

Bronx will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to Selden, NY to take on the Sharks of Suffolk in NJCAA Region 15 action. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
