Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's volleyball hangs tough, puts forth valiant effort in straight sets loss to Redhawks

The Broncos' women's volleyball team dropped a CUNY match last night, falling to the Redhawks of LaGuardia by scores of 12-25, 14-25, and 21-25. The match took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to 0-3 (0-3 CUNY) on the 2025 campaign, while the visitors stayed unblemished at 3-0 (3-0 CUNY).

Despite the loss for Bronx, veteran Pamela Sierra finalized her evening with a team-high five kills to go along with 10 digs. Alexandra Cuello, Shanice Walters, and Adriana Powell contributed two kills apiece, and setter Yamelis Santana's nine assists were a team-high. Finally, Yatziri Arroyo-Sanchez's 14 digs led all players.

In the victory for LaGuardia, Valeria Duque-Naranjo registered a match-high 10 kills (10-2-17, .471). She also tied for the team-high of six digs while adding three service aces and a pair of digs. Natalie Orteaga-Soto finalized her evening with four kills and a match-high five service aces, and Arianna Ferguson's 10 assists led all players.

The Redhawks dominated the opening set, racing out to a commanding 23-6 advantage thanks to a whopping 13 service aces, including four apiece from Daniela Acosta and Orteaga-Soto. Bronx attempted a late push, rattling off five consecutive points (a kill by Powell, a service ace by Arroyo-Sanchez, and three visitor attack errors) to inch to within 12, 23-11. The CUNY foes then alternated the final three points, with the set finalizing via an attack error by Sierra.

Bronx snatched an early 6-4 advantage in set two, with Sierra contributing a kill during that early run. Back and forth play ensued, and later, with LaGuardia up 9-8, the Redhawks scored five straight points (highlighted by Duque-Naranjo's pair of kills, and a kill by Abigail Izarparte) to take a 14-8 lead. From that point forward, the Broncos weren't able to draw any closer than five points down, as the Redhawks captured set two, 25-14.

In a very competitive third set, the Broncos grabbed an early 5-2 advantage. That aforementioned run featured a service ace by Santana, and kills by Cuello and Walters. LaGuardia outscored Bronx 9-4 over the next 13 points to catapult ahead by a score of 11-9, but a service error by Acosta, followed by a service by Cuello, knotted the set at 11-all.

Later, with the Broncos trailing 15-14, the hosts jumped ahead once again thanks to three straight follies by the Redhawks. Bronx led 17-15, and then 18-16, before LaGuardia rattled off four straight points to grab a 20-18 lead. During that run of four straight, three different Redhawks registered kills, including Orteaga-Soto, Mayra Palacios, and Duque-Naranjo. Errors by Ferguson and Orteaga Soto followed, tying the set at 20 apiece.

The Redhawks would then put the finishing touches on the sweep, outscoring the Broncos 5-1 the rest of the way, using a kill by Orteaga-Soto, and a kill and service ace by Duque-Naranjo, to do it.

LaGuardia hit .119 for the match (22-14-67), while the Broncos recorded 13 kills and hit in the negative. The Redhawks collected 18 service aces on the evening compared to four for the hosts, the visitors held a slight 34-31 edge in digs.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the team will compete in a CUNY tri-match at Kingsborough. At 12:00pm, Bronx will clash with the Tigers of Queensborough in a neutral-site match. Following that, at 1:30pm, the Broncos take on Kingsborough.
