Broncos unable to slow Express' high-powered offense, fall 5-2 in Region 15 action

The Broncos' men's soccer team lost an inter-borough Region 15 contest on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Express of Monroe University-Bronx by a score of 5-2. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to a mark of 1-3 on the 2025 campaign, while the Express improved to 2-2.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, veteran Abdul Mohammed notched a pair of goals for the hosts, with Hanif Soule registering an assist.

Mamadou Top had was the offensive standout for the Express on the afternoon, registering two goals, including the official match-winning tally on a penalty kick during the 56th minute. Jason Chunchi also played well, slashing home a goal and collecting a pair of assists.

The Express wasted no time grabbing a lead in the early stages of the contest, as Brando Tuba tipped in his own rebound to give Monroe University-Bronx a 1-0 advantage (1:59). Later, in the 19th minute, Chunchi hustled the ball down the field and tapped the ball to Naim Bakere, who deposited it into the net from deep inside the box to increase the visitors' edge to a pair, 2-0. That aforementioned goal would cap the scoring for the opening session, as the Express took a 2-0 advantage into the break.

Early in the second half, the Broncos sliced the Express' advantage in half when Abdul Mohammed collected his own rebound and rocketed it into the net to make it a 2-1 score.

Just over six minutes later, the Express drew a foul inside the box and were awarded with a penalty kick. Top cashed in on the opportunity, launching the ball into the back of the net to give the Express their second two-goal advantage of the afternoon, 3-1.

Later, during the 74th minute, the Broncos committed another foul in the box. This time, Chunchi took the penalty kick and slashed the ball home, giving Monroe University-Bronx a commanding 4-1 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest. Less than 30 seconds later, Chunchi found Top, who blasted the ball into the net for his second goal of the match, and Chunchi's second helper of the day. That made the score 5-1 in favor of the Express.

The hosts were able to get one back thanks to Mohammed's second goal of the outing during the 81st minute, but it was not enough for the Broncos as the Express pulled off the 5-2 Region 15 win

In net for Monroe, Kimany Arzu made four saves and picked up the victory. For the Broncos, Maxwell Asomani Asare took the loss, logging 13:37 of action and allowing a goal while making two saves. Anthony Balbuena played the final 76:23 between the pipes for the Broncos, yielding four goals and making three stops.

Monroe had the advantage in shots during the afternoon, 23-11, including a 10-6 edge in shots on-goal. Bronx earned four corner kick opportunities, compared to two for the visitors.

The Broncos will return to action tomorrow afternoon, as Bronx will travel to Middletown, NY to take on Orange County Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
