Women's volleyball suffers defeats against Hostos, BMCC to open 2025 campaign

The Broncos' women's volleyball team started its 2025 campaign with a pair of CUNY defeats in recent days, falling to the Caimans of Hostos Community College by scores of 17-25, 12-25, and 14-25 at the Swap, before falling to the BMCC Panthers by scores of 22-25, 15-25, and 13-25 at the Alumni Gymnasium Thursday evening. While the Broncos are 0-2 to start the year (0-2 CUNY), Hostos moved to 1-0 (1-0 CUNY), AND BMCC evened its mark at 1-1 (1-1 CUNY).

In Bronx's loss to the Caimans, the Broncos were paced by Pamela Sierra, as she posted team-highs of six kills (6-2-20, .200) and nine digs while tying for the team-high with four service aces. Alexandra Cuello hit .286 on the evening, notching four kills while contributing five digs and four service aces, and Yamelis Santana's 10 assists led all Broncos.

Assiatou Traore put forth a brilliant performance to lead Hostos, notching a match-high nine kills while hitting .429 on the night (9-3-14). Yohenna Galva added six kills while tying for the match-high of 10 service aces, and Alyson Camejo led all players with 20 assists. Kimberly Rameriz finalized her evening with a match-best 15, while tying Galva for the match-high of 10 service aces.

For the match, the Caimans notched 30 service aces compared to 12 for the Broncos. Hostos also hit .145 on the evening (17-7-69), while Bronx earned a hitting percentage of .036.

In the Bronx's home opener against BMCC, Sierra's six kills led all players. Her five digs tied for the match-high, and she also contributed three service aces. Cuello put forth a fine performance, finishing with three kills, tying for the match-high of five digs, and leading all Broncos with four service aces. Finally, Yamelis Santana's seven assists were a team-high.

Gina Arias and Sarah Sellami tied for team-best of five kills for BMCC. Sellami also added a team-high three digs, to go along with three service aces. Wilyne Lincifort added a match-high seven service aces to go along with four kills and two digs, and Devon Vazquez's 12 assists were a match-high. Finally, it was Jaylynn Mateo contributed six services aces and two digs.

BMCC held a 22-9 advantage in service aces. Additionally, the Panthers hit .143 on the evening (19-12-49), while the Broncos earned nine kills, but hit in the negative. Bronx held a 16-13 edge in digs on the evening.

The Broncos will now take a break until Thursday, September 18, when the team returns to the court to take on LaGuardia Community College at the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 6:00pm.
