Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Broncos salute Katherine Reyes, Taylar Hill on Sophomore Night before proceeding to defeat Tigers, 49-42

The Broncos women's basketball team picked up an impressive victory on Tuesday evening, defeating the Tigers of Queensborough Community College by a score of 49-42. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the victory, the Broncos improved to a mark of 5-12, while the Tigers dipped to 2-11.

Prior to the contest, the BCC Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor sophomores Katherine Reyes and Taylar Hill in a show of appreciation for their dedication to the institution's women's basketball program. Each sophomore was presented with an action-shot picture frame and a bouquet of flowers. The sophomores gathered with their coaches and teammates for a ceremonious photo prior to tip-off.

Yahannis Martinez led the way for the Broncos in their victory, scoring a game-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and a pair of steals. Ana Matos nearly registered a triple-double in a terrific all-around display, as she scored 13 points and posted a team-high 18 rebounds. She also posted game-highs of nine assists and four steals. Hill contributed nine points, six rebounds, and two steals, and Angelina Gonzalez finalized her evening with eight points, 13 rebounds, and three assists.

Despite the loss for the Tigers, Renike Ewen paced Queensborough with a team-high 11 points to go along with game-highs of 22 points and three blocked shots. Samyah Allen finalized her evening with nine points, six boards, and team-highs of five assists and four steals. Finally, it was Nasira Short and Sheila Da Silva scoring eight points apiece, with Short grabbing 12 rebounds, and Da Silva recorded seven boards.

With the game knotted at six apiece with 6:31 remaining in the first quarter, Bronx rattled off eight consecutive points over a span of 5:25 to snatch a 14-6 edge. Martinez scored four points during that spurt, with Matos and Gonzalez adding a bucket each. The Tigers scored the final three points of the period, as BCC carried a 14-9 advantage into the second quarter.

Bronx scored the first two buckets of the second quarter, courtesy of Martinez and Gonzalez, to take an 18-9 edge, but Queensborough put together an 8-0 run to slice its deficit to one (18-17) with 5:38 left in the half. Four different Tigers registered a basket during that aforementioned run, including Angelene Miniano, Da Silva, Short, and Ewen.

The Tigers' momentum continued to build, as the visitors pulled ahead 21-20 on a jumper by Short with 2:48 left in the half. On the Broncos' next possession, a hoop by Matos gave the hosts the lead again, 22-21. Neither squad would score again over the final 2:10 of the game, as Bronx took a slim one-point edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, the teams exchanged the lead four times, with neither squad a lead bigger than three points. With the game tied at 30-all, Martinez gave the Broncos the lead for good by draining a jumper to put the hosts ahead 32-30. That would be the score as time expired on the third period.

Bronx looked to be in prime position to grab a win, taking an eight-point edge (41-33) with 5:04 remaining. Hill helped the Broncos grab that eight-point advantage by nailing a trifecta, and recording another hoop. The Tigers refused to go down quietly, though, outscoring the Broncos 9-4 over a span of 4:30 to pull to within three (45-42) with 34 seconds remaining. That would be as close as Queensborough would get, however, as Bronx drained four of their six free throw attempts down the stretch, while the Tigers wouldn't score again. The Broncos went on to win the thriller on Sophomore night, 49-42.

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball, with the Broncos connected on just 21 out of 80 shots (26.3 percent), and Queensborough earning a conversion rate of 25 percent (18-72). The Tigers held a slim 59-54 edge on the glass, while also swatting five shots to Bronx's two. The Broncos held advantages in steals (12-7), and assists (16-11), and the hosts also won the turnover battle, committing just 14 miscues on the evening, while Queensborough had 21.

The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Bronx will travel to Edison, NJ to take on Middlesex County College. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
