Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bronx's resurgent 2024-2025 season finalizes with loss at Nassau in NJCAA Region XV quarterfinals

The Broncos' women's basketball team finalized its 2024-2025 campaign last night, falling to the Lions of Nassau Community College by a score of 62-48 in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Region XV Women's Basketball Tournament. With the defeat, Bronx wrapped-up its season at 6-15, while the Lions advanced to the tournament's semifinals, as they'll battle Hostos on Saturday at 12:00pm.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Ana Matos posted a double-double, registering team-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a game-high five assists. Yahannis Martinez scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds, led all players with six steals, and dished three assists, and Angelina Gonzalez scored eight points, snatched four boards, and added three steals. Taylar Hill finalized her evening with seven points, six rebounds, and three steals, and Madison Wade collected 10 caroms.

In the victory for the Lions, Kirina Azemar posted a double-double with a game-high 27 points (12-24 FG) to go along with 13 rebounds. She also added three assists on the evening. Nykia Robinson finished with 20 points, six rebounds, and three steals, and Ambrasia Frye nearly recorded a double-double, scoring nine points and snatching 10 rebounds. Janatta Bartley's whopping 29 rebounds led all players, and Janell San Jose contributed 10 rebounds and four assists.

Gonzalez's converted layup 54 seconds into the contest gave the Bronx an early 4-3 advantage, and neither team would score another point over the ensuing 3:54. That aforementioned collective drought was finally ended by Azemar, as she scored a bucket to give the Lions a 5-4 advantage with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter.

Later in the session, with the game tied at five apiece, Nassau finished the quarter on an 8-0 run to snatch a 13-5 advantage after 10 minutes of action. That spurt was highlighted by Robinson's five points, and also featured a converted basket by Azermar, and a drained free throw by Bartley.

In the second quarter, the Broncos stayed within striking distance of the Lions. Nassau led 19-11 with 6:17 remaining in the half, but Bronx put together a 7-2 run to inch to within three (21-18). Matos netted three points during that aforementioned run, with Martinez and Hill contributing two apiece. The Lions did close the half on a 6-1 run, capped by a drained triple by Robinson with nine seconds remaining in the half. As the teams entered the locker room at halftime, the hosts led 27-19.

Twice during the early stages of the third quarter, the Broncos pulled to within five, but the Lions put together a ferocious 13-0 run over a span of 2:32 to put some distance between themselves and the visitors. Azermar performed sensationally during that stretch for Nassau, accounting for 12 of the team's 13 points during that spurt. As the quarter closed, the Lions held a commanding 16-point edge, 46-30.

Bronx did outscore Nassau 18-16 in the fourth period, but the Broncos never drew any closer than 14 points down for the entirety of the period, as the Lions went on to snatch a 14-point triumph.

Neither squad shot the basketball well, but the Lions were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, as Nassau earned a conversion rate of 33.8 percent (25-74), while the Broncos connected on 18 of 88 shot attempts (20.5 percent). The Lions held a commanding 76-51 edge on the glass, but the Broncos held advantages in steals (16-7) and assists (9-8). Bronx won the turnover battle on the evening, committing 18 miscues, while the Lions finished with 34.

Although the season ended, the Broncos have plenty to be proud of. First year Head Coach Craig Williams led a program resurgence in 2024-2025, as the Broncos registered six victories this season, which are as many wins as the team had in the three previous years prior to Williams' arrival. Bronx also qualified for the NJCAA Region XV Tournament for the first time in 10 seasons, and the CUNY Conference postseason for the first time since 2021-2022 campaign. Ana Matos and Yahannis Martinez established themselves as cornerstones, and with Williams' recruiting strategy, things are only looking up for the Broncos as they approach the 2025-2026 season!
