Broncos split pair of contests, defeating Dutchess 65-51, before falling to Hostos in CUNY Tournament semifinals

The Broncos' women's basketball team split a pair of games in recent days, defeating the Falcons of Dutchess by a score of 65-51 in Poughkeepsie, NY, before turning around a day later and falling to the Caimans of Hostos in the semifinal round of the 2024-2025 CUNY Community College Tournament by a score of 80-44 at the Swamp in the Bronx. With that output, the Broncos are now 6-14 on the season. The Falcons dipped to 2-14 with the loss, and the Caimans improved to 23-1, advancing to the CUNY title game against Kingsborough Friday evening at BMCC (6pm).

In Bronx's victory over Dutchess, three Broncos registered double-doubles on the evening, including Yahannis Martinez, as she scored a team-high 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a game-high eight steals. Ana Matos finished with 15 points, 10 boards, a game-high five assists, and five steals, and Angelina Gonzalez scored 14 points, collected a game-high 20 rebounds, and added three steals.

Despite the loss for the Falcons, Eva Bertiz's 19 points was a game-high. She also posted team-highs of 11 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks, to go along with a pair of steals. Reina Lindhorst contributed 12 points, eight rebounds, a pair of assists, and two steals, and finally, Mary Toner netted 10 points, tallied a team-high four steals, grabbed three rebounds, and registered two dimes.

The Broncos earned a slightly-higher shooting percentage on the evening, connecting on 25 of their 62 attempts from the floor (40.3 percent), while the Falcons earned a conversion rate of 38.3 percent (18-47). Bronx dominated the glass, snatching 56 rebounds compared to 28 for Dutchess, and the Broncos also held an 18-8 edge in steals. The Falcons recorded nine assists compared to seven for the visitors, and Dutchess won the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues, while Bronx finished with 18.

Matos paced Bronx against Hostos, as she scored 21 points (10-18 FG) while pulling down eight rebounds and adding five steals. Taylar Hill contributed nine points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals. Gonzalez finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and two steals, and Martinez scored six points, snatched 10 boards, dished four assists, and registered three steals.

The Broncos earned a conversion rate of 35.8 percent for the evening (19-53), while collecting 33 rebounds, swiping 16 steals, registering seven assists, and turning the ball over 29 times.

Bronx will compete in the NJCAA Region XV Tournament for the first time in 2015 this coming Tuesday evening, as the Broncos (No. 5 seed) will travel to Garden City, NY to battle the No. 4 seeded Lions of Nassau Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
