Broncos improve to 7-3 (4-1 CUNY) on 2025-2026 season with 83-59 drubbing of LaGuardia Red Hawks

The Broncos' women's basketball team won for the fifth time in six tries, blowing out the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College by a score of 83-59. The contest took place in Long Island City, NY. With the victory, Bronx improved to a mark of 7-3 on the 2025-2026 campaign (4-1 CUNY), while the hosts dipped to 3-5 (1-1 CUNY).

In the victory for the Broncos, Destiny Davis was masterful, connecting on 12 of her 19 attempts from the floor, and five of her six shots from the free throw line, to finish with a game-high 29 points. She also snatched 10 rebounds, dished five assists, and swiped five steals. Akela Robertson (6-11 FG) added 14 points on the evening, and Kolonnie Green registered yet another double-double, scoring 10 points and posting game-bests of 17 rebounds, six assists, six steals, and four blocked shots.

Despite the loss for the Red Hawks, Yasmine "Akoni" Drysdale-Ash scored a team-high 12 points (6-11 FG) while snatching three rebounds and swiping three steals, and Fily Diop added 12 points, two rebounds, and two steals. Meniia Weeks scored 11 points while collecting four rebounds and swatting two shots, and Jenny Washington and Seyabou Diop netted eight points apiece.

Bronx built a 15-5 advantage in the opening 6:12 of the opening quarter. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Gonzalez's seven points, and Davis' six. The hosts would respond with a ferocious 10-0 spurt over the ensuing 2:23 to knot the contest at 15-all. Fily Diop and Mariyah Boston netted four points apiece during that game-tying run for the hosts. The pendulum then swung the visitors' way, as Davis scored eight consecutive points to give Bronx a 23-15 edge. That 23-15 score would hold as time expired on the first quarter.

The visitors built off the momentum they built at the end of the first quarter by extending their run, netting the opening eight points of the corner to increase their run to 16-0, and lead to 31-15. Amber Alexander scored four those aforementioned eight points to open the period.

Later, with Bronx ahead 36-20, the Red Hawks clawed back into the conference clash, rattling off eight consecutive points (courtesy of four points apiece by Weeks and Drysdale-Ash) to pull to within eight (36-28). Buckets by the Broncos' Dickerson and Davis gave the Broncos a 40-28 edge at the break.

In the third quarter, the Broncos took a 17-point edge 3:53 into the period, but LaGuardia once again battled to stay close, The Red Hawks used a 10-4 run to inch to within 11 (55-44), but Bronx dominated the remainder of the quarter, closing it out by scoring eight of the final nine points to capture a 63-45 edge heading into the last quarter of action.

Akela Robertson was incredible in the final period, at one point scoring 12 consecutive points for her team. The visitors went up by as many as 33 (80-47), before eventually winning by 24 (83-59).

The Broncos connected on 42.2 percent of their attempts from the floor (35-83), while the hosts earned a conversion rate of 33.3 percent (23-69). Bronx was excellent from the free throw line, draining 11 out of 15 shots (73.3 percent), while LaGuardia misfired on 12 freebees (10-22, 45.5 percent). Bronx dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Red Hawks 63-37, and the Broncos dished 23 assists compared to 12 for LaGuardia. Bronx held a slim 18-15 edge in steals, The Red Hawks won the turnover battle, committing 34 miscues, while the Broncos finished with 39.

Bronx will close out calendar year 2025 on Saturday afternoon, as the Broncos will travel to the Viking Gymnasium in Valhalla, NY to take on Westchester Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
