Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos struggle to find rhythm on offense, drop season-opener to BMCC Panthers at Alumni Gymnasium

The Broncos' men's basketball team rung in the new 2025-2026 campaign last night at the Alumni Gymnasium in front of an energetic audience. Unfortunately, Bronx could not earn the victory, as the Broncos were defeated by the Panthers of BMCC by a score of 75-50 in CUNY action. While the game served as the season-opener for the Broncos, BMCC improved to 2-0 on the year (1-0 CUNY).

Despite the loss for Bronx, Timothaeus Graham led the way for his squad with a team-high nine points to go along with a pair of rebounds. Newcomers Alan Pimentel, Shamari Johnson, Simard Edwards, and returner Tyler Flagg scored seven points apiece, and point guard Dai'zon Kearse finalized his evening with five points and a team-high five assists.

Noah Smith's 17 points for BMCC led all players. He also snatched five rebounds on the evening, as well. Jayport Smith flirted with a triple-double, as he scored 16 points, collected nine rebounds, and dished a game-high eight assists. Alden Cornelius netted 10 points while grabbing three boards, and Isaiah Ifill scored seven points while pulling down 10 rebounds.

Though the teams engaged in some tense back-and-forth play in the early stages of the contest, the Panthers never trailed in the game, taking the lead for good when Jayport Smith's drained trifecta gave the Panthers a 13-10 advantage with 12:28 remaining in the opening session. From there, the visitors outscored the Broncos 22-5 for the rest of the half, holding Bronx to just one converted field goal during that timeframe. At break, BMCC led 35-15.

The Panthers scored the first 12 points of the second half to balloon their lead to 32, 47-15, with 16:50 remaining in the game. Over the ensuing 2:40, the Broncos tried to battle back, putting together a 9-1 run to pull to within 24 (48-24) with 14:10 to go. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Pimentel's five points, and a bucket apiece from Edwards and Johnson.

Unfortunately for Bronx, the Panthers did a solid job of maintaining their colossal advantage the rest of the way, never leading by any fewer than 21 points, and eventually going on to secure the CUNY victory by 25.

The Panthers shot 49 percent from the floor for the night (24-49), while the Broncos earned just a 26.3 percent conversion rate (20-76). BMCC held a solid 49-37 edge on the glass, while also swatting six shots to Bronx's one. The teams had 15 assists apiece, and the Broncos won the turnover battle, committing just 13 miscues while the visitors had 18.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will make the short trip to Hostos for a CUNY clash with the Caimans. Start-time at the Swamp is scheduled for 8:00pm.
