Bronx converts just nine field goals in second half, falls to Suffolk in Region XV action

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped an NJCAA Region XV contest on its Homecoming night, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk by a score of 74-59. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx, NY. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 0-7 on the 2025-2026 campaign, while Suffolk improved to a record of 1-4.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Dai'zon Kearse scored a team-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Veteran Alexander Hattel finalized his evening with 13 points and six rebounds, while also tying for the game-high of four steals. Said Martin and Alan Pimentel contributed nine points apiece, with Martin snatching a team-high 10 rebounds, and Pimentel collecting four boards and dishing two assists.

Kazmin Pensa-Johnson put forth a strong game for the victorious Sharks, as he posted game-highs of 23 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocked shots. He also added two assists, as well. Michael Favaloro posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Mekhi Kelly and Mitchell Joseph contributed eight points apiece.

Trailing 13-10 with 11:09 remaining in the opening half, Kearse nailed a long triple to knot the score at 13-all. Later, Martin's converted layup with 7:58 left in the session put the Broncos ahead 18-17. He drew a foul on the bucket, and hit the ensuing freebee to boost Bronx's advantage to a pair (19-17). Bronx later led 26-22, but Suffolk scored eight of the final 12 points of the half to snatch a 34-30 edge as time expired on the first half.

Suffolk led by as many as 23 in the second half (74-51), and the Broncos made the final score respectable by netting the final eight points of the contest. Bronx didn't hit a second half field goal until 4:12 into the session, converting on just nine for the period, while also misfiring on 11 out of 20 free throw attempts.

Neither team shot efficiently from the floor, as Suffolk earned a conversion rate of 33.3 percent (22-66), and Bronx connected on just 19 of its 71 attempts (26.8 percent). The Sharks held a commanding 60-41 edge on the glass, and also dished 17 assists on the evening compared to nine for the hosts. Bronx did register 15 steals on the night, while Suffolk finished with eight, and the Broncos also won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues on the evening, while the visitors had 23.

The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday evening, November 25, as Bronx will travel to the Falcon Hall Gymnasium in Poughkeepsie, NY to clash with Dutchess. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
