Angelina Gonzalez scores team-high 15 points in Broncos' 45-39 victory over Sharks

The Broncos' women's basketball team picked up a hard-fought victory this past Saturday afternoon, defeating the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College by a score of 45-39. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the victory, Bronx improved to a mark of 4-9 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while Suffolk dipped to a record of 5-7.

In the victory for the Broncos, Angelina Gonzalez scored a team-high 15 points, connecting on seven of her 15 shot attempts on the day. She also snatched 10 rebounds while dishing three assists and swiping a pair of steals. Yahannis Martinez also recorded a double-double, netting 14 points and grabbing 10 boards while dishing three assists and recording three steals. Finally, it was Taylar Hill finalizing her day with eight points and eight rebounds.

Suffolk was paced by Aysia Francis' game-high 21 points (9-12 FT). She also collected seven boards while registering a pair of steals. Megan Popielaski scored six points while grabbing 10 rebounds, and Alyssa D'Abbraccio scored six points while grabbing six rebounds.

In what was a very close contest throughout, Bronx led 12-6 after a quarter, and 19-18 at halftime. After each squad netted 13 points in the third, the Broncos outworked the Sharks in the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors 13-8 to solidify the six-point victory.

The Broncos were the more efficient team shooting the basketball, connecting on 29 percent of their attempts from the floor (18-62), while the Sharks converted on just 20.7 percent of theirs (12-58). Bronx held a slim 46-42 edge on the glass, while also piling 14 steals compared to Suffolk's five. The Broncos held a 7-6 advantage in assists, but the Sharks won the turnover battle, committing 26 miscues to the Broncos' 32.

Bronx will look to win its second consecutive game on Thursday evening, as the Broncos welcome the Lions of Nassau Community College to the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
