Broncos struggle offensively, lose road clashes to LaGuardia's Club Team and SUNY Orange

The Broncos' women's basketball team lost its first two games of calendar year 2025, falling to the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College's Club Team (1/7) in Long Island City by a score of 74-59, before turning around two days later and falling at SUNY Orange in Middletown, NY, 76-49. With the pair of defeats, Bronx is now 3-8 on the 2024-2025 campaign.

With the victory, the Red Hawks improved to a mark of 6-7 and SUNY Orange upped its record to 3-9.

Despite the loss to the Red Hawks, Bronx was paced by Yahannis Martinez, as she connected on nine of her 17 attempts from the floor, finishing with 21 points. She also grabbed 12 rebounds, tallied four steals, and dished three assists. Ana Matos scored 16 points while collecting 12 boards, adding five steals, and tallying four assists, and Angelina Gonzalez also posted a double-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals.

For the game, the Broncos connected on 34.8 percent of their attempts from the floor (24-69) while grabbing 58 rebounds, tallying 13 steals, and dishing 10 assists.

In Bronx's loss to SUNY Orange, Martinez registered yet another double-double, scoring 13 points and snatching a game-high 13 rebounds while swiping five steals. Angelina Gonzalez netted 11 points while collecting 10 boards, tying for the game-high of six steals, and dishing three assists, and Katherine Reyes finished with 10 points and four rebounds.

In the victory for the Colts, Adrianna Vazquez scored a game-high 23 points while grabbing four rebounds and tallying two steals. Victoria Harrison finished with 16 points, six steals, five rebounds, and five assists. Eva Bloom contributed 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and Olivia Harrison nearly recorded a double-double, as she scored nine points and snatched 12 caroms.

The Broncos led 15-11 after a quarter, but it was also SUNY Orange after that. The Colts outscored Bronx 20-8 in the second to take a 31-23 advantage at halftime. SUNY Orange then doubled-up the visitors in the third quarter (24-12) before capping off the win by netting 21 points in the final period to the Broncos' 14.

SUNY Orange won the game despite shooting just 30.1 percent from the floor (25-83). The Broncos were just a tad more consistent, earning a conversion rate of 31 percent (18-58). The Colts held a 44-37 edge on the glass, while also dishing 12 assists to Bronx's eight. The hosts swiped a total of 18 steals, while the Broncos had 16, and Bronx won the turnover battle, committing 15 miscues, while SUNY Orange had 19.

The Broncos will look to get back on track Thursday evening, as Bronx will travel to Brooklyn, NY to battle the Wave of Kingsborough in a CUNY Community College Conference contest. Start-time for the clash is set for 6:00pm.
