Broncos drop first two games of calendar year 2025, falling to LaGuardia and SUNY Orange

The Broncos' men's basketball team lost its first two games of calendar year 2025, falling to the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College (1/7) in Long Island City by a score of 73-68, before turning around two days later and falling at SUNY Orange in Middletown, NY, 116-56. With the pair of defeats, Bronx is now 1-12 on the 2024-2025 campaign, including a record of 0-6 in CUNY Community College action.

With the victory, the Red Hawks improved to a mark of 3-11 (3-4 CUNY Community College Conference), and SUNY Orange upped its record to 12-1.

In this past Tuesday's CUNY Conference defeat to LaGuardia, four players scored in double figures for the Broncos, including James Wenzel and Matayus Kola, as they tied for the team-high of 15 points apiece. Wenzel also snatched four rebounds, dished two assists, and blocked a pair of shots, while Kola added two steals. Andi Metaliaj finished with 12 points, a game-high five assists, and four rebounds, and Alexander Hattel finalized his evening with 11 points, six rebounds, and six steals.

Leading the way for LaGuardia was Travon Lawrence, as he put together a spectacular effort, knocking down 11 of his 15 attempts from the line and finishing with a game-high 31 points. He also collected five rebounds, as well. Charlie Hall posted a double-double with 24 and 12 rebounds, and Rayan Erold Tsapi Meguie added 10 rebounds.

In what was a tightly-contested contest throughout, the Red Hawks held a slim 31-27 edge at the break, and outscored the Broncos 41-41 to account for the nail-biting five-point margin of victory.

Bronx lost the game despite shooting the basketball far more efficiently, as the Broncos connected on 58.3 percent of their shots (28-48), compared to just a 33.8 percent conversion rate for LaGuardia (25-74). The Red Hawks made the most of their attempts at the line, draining 69.2 percent of their attempts there (18-26), while Bronx missed 13 free throws (5-18, 27.8 percent). LaGuardia held a commanding 42-28 edge on the glass, but the Broncos held advantages in assists (13-10) and steals (12-9). Bronx also won the turnover battle, committing just three miscues, while the hosts had 20.

In the Broncos' loss to the Colts, Bronx was paced by Kola's double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds). His seven assists were a game-high, and he also added three steals. Abraham Richter finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and a game-high four blocked shots, and Metaliaj finalized his evening with 10 points and five rebounds.

Six players scored in double figures for SUNY Orange, including Jabari Phillip, as he drilled 12 of his 17 shots from the floor, and all six of his free throw attempts, to finish with a game-high 30 points. His 11 rebounds also led all players, and he finished with three steals, as well. Johnny Floyd scored 14 points and registered two steals, and Marquis Gill (12 points), Daniel Lans (12 points), Jaquan Jeremie (12 points), and Giovanni Rupert (11 points) rounded out the Colts in double figures. Lans' 10 steals were a game-high, and Jeremie and Rupert pulled down seven board apiece.

After a competitive opening half that saw the Colts head into the locker room with just a 10-point advantage (40-30), SUNY Orange outscored Bronx 76-26 to run away with a convincing victory.

SUNY Orange earned a 47.3 percent conversion rate for the evening (44-93), while the Broncos hit on 46.2 percent of their attempts (24-52). The Colts held a commanding 63-31 advantage on the glass, while also registering a whopping 31 steals on the evening to Bronx's 12. SUNY Orange held a 23-9 edge in assists, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 19 miscues while the Broncos had 20.

The Broncos will look to get back on track Tuesday evening, while Bronx will travel to the Viking Gymnasium in Valhalla, NY to take on Westchester Community College. Start-time for the game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
