Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Despite valiant defensive effort, Broncos upended by Sharks 2-0 at Ohio Field

The Broncos' men's soccer team dropped a low-scoring match on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk County Community College by a score of 2-0. The contest took place at Ohio Field on the campus of Bronx Community College. With the loss, Bronx slipped to a mark of 2-3 on the 2024 campaign, while the victorious Sharks improved to 4-2-2.

Bronx and Suffolk combined for 22 shots in the opening 45 minutes of action, but neither squad was able to breakthrough for the contest's opening goal. The Sharks registered 15 shots (three on-goal), while the Broncos recorded seven (five on-goal) during the scoreless session.

In the second half, Suffolk's Michael Ruggiero took over, netting two goals in a 2:05 span to spark the Sharks. At 68:11, Ruggiero collected a pass from Stamatios Grammenos, beat a defender, and tapped the ball past Broncos netminder Edwin Martinez, who had been playing exceptionally well prior to the tally. Ruggiero would strike again at 70:16, scoring on a breakaway off a pass from Luis Banegas. Suffolk led 2-0 at that juncture, a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

For the match, the Sharks held a 33-13 edge in shots, including an 11-3 lead in shots-on-target. Suffolk goalkeeper Hamad Farooq earned a shutout, making four saves on the afternoon. Bronx's Edwin Martinez yielded two goals but also made nine saves, keeping the Broncos in the contest and giving them a chance to win throughout.

The Broncos will finalize their three-match homestand this Thursday, as Bronx welcomes Dutchess Community College to Ohio Field. Start-time for the match is scheduled for 4:00pm.
