Women's volleyball splits pair of matches, falling to BMCC Thursday before bouncing back to defeat Roxbury Friday

The Broncos' women's volleyball team split a pair of home matches in recent days, falling to the Panthers in CUNYAC action by scores of 13-25, 15-25, and 13-25 on Thursday evening, before bouncing back to defeat the Tigers of Roxbury 25-20, 25-6, and 26-24 on Friday evening. With that output, the Broncos are now 1-2 (0-2 CUNYAC) on the 2024 campaign. BMCC is 1-0 (1-0 CUNYAC), and Roxbury is 0-2.

In Thursday evening's loss to the Panthers, Pamela Sierra led the way for Bronx, registering match-highs of 11 digs and eight service aces to go along with four kills. Yamelis Santana and Shanice Walters added two kills apiece, and Naomi Rodriguez's seven assists led all Broncos. Finally, it was Valerie De Los Santos contributing six digs.

For the BMCC Panthers, Jaylynn Mateo and Andrea Perez-Guzman led the attack by tying for the match-high of seven kills. Mateo also added four service aces, three assists, and two digs, and Perez-Guzman finalized her evening with two service aces, two solo blocks, and two assists. Setter Kavana Liburd's 33 assists led all players, and Devon Vazquez's five service aces were a match-high.

Against the Tigers, Bronx was led by Pamela Sierra's match-high nine kills. She also tied for the match-high of 10 digs, while adding five service aces, as well. Santana hit .400 on the evening (4-0-10) with her four kills, and Veronica Rivera contributed three. Rodriguez's 16 assists were a match-high, and Andrea Ramos and Valerie De Los Santos tied for the match-high of seven service aces. Ramos also added six digs, while De Los Santos had five.

Keren Cezar's three kills and five assists were both team-bests for Roxbury. The Tigers also got two kills apiece from Naybelin Mejia, Nadia Urbaez, Ashley Valbrun, and Anaya Florence.

In the opening set against Roxbury, Bronx fell behind by a score of 9-5 before scoring 13 of the next 17 points to snatch an 18-13 advantage. Pamela Sierra recorded two kills during that aforementioned run, with Rodriguez and Ramos each adding one. Later, the Broncos held a 23-16 advantage, but Roxbury scored four out of five points to close to within four (24-20). Pamela Sierra clinched the set for Bronx, though, registering a kill off a beautiful set from Rodriguez.

The Broncos dominated the second set in all facets. Leading 14-6, Bronx ran off 11 consecutive points to capture the set, 25-6, and take a 2-0 lead for the match. De Los Santos' five service aces, as well as Pamela Sierra's three kills, highlighted that dominant closing stretch for the hosts.

In the third and most competitive set of the evening, Bronx rallied back from deficits of 8-3, 12-10, and 20-17 to win it. In an exciting final stretch, the Broncos held a 24-22 lead, but Roxbury fought off defeat by capturing two straight points, the latter coming courtesy of a kill by Florence. Bronx then closed out the victory following a service error by Mejia, and an attack error by Valbrun.

Bronx hit .167 for the match (22-12-60), while Roxbury hit in the negative (12-16-52, -.077). The Broncos dominated in the service ace category, registering a whopping 25 compared to seven for the opposition. Bronx held a 17-8 edge in assists, and the Tigers had a minimal 25-24 advantage in digs.

The Broncos will look to make it two consecutive victories this coming Tuesday, as they'll welcome LaGuardia Community College to the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for the match is scheduled for 6:00pm.
