Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Pamela Sierra (15 kills, .412 hitting percentage) dominates in Broncos' four-set loss to Caimans

The Broncos' women's volleyball team played its 2024 season opening match last night, falling to the Caimans of Hostos Community College in a very competitive match by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 18-25, and 25-27. The match took place at "The Swamp" in the Bronx, NY. While the match served as the season opener for Bronx (0-1 overall, 0-1 CUNYAC), the Panthers improved to 1-1 overall with the victory (1-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss, the Broncos were paced by newcomer Pamela Sierra, as she registered a match-high 15 kills while hitting .412 on the evening (15-1-34). Her 12 digs and eight service aces were also team-highs. In addition, Andrea Ramos finished with four kills and 11 digs, and Naomi Rodriguez added a team-high 16 assists to go along with seven digs, four service aces, and a pair of kills. Veronica Rivera and Valerie De Los Santos contributed 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

For the Caimans, Natalie Mora led the way with a team-best 13 kills, hitting .306 in the process (13-2-36). Her 10 service aces led all players, and she also piled 14 digs, as well. Nicole Rodriguez was also stellar on the night, recording 11 kills (11-2-37, .243) to go along with five digs and three service aces. Nyla Harris and Samantha Colon contributed four kills apiece, with Harris adding four service aces and four digs, and Colon finishing with three service aces and six digs. Setter Alyson Camejo's 20 assists were a match-high, and she also added six service aces.

After capturing the opening set 25-22 in impressive fashion, the Broncos fell behind 18-6 in set number two, but refused to quit. Bronx rattled off six consecutive points, with the run highlighted by a pair of Pamela Sierra kills, and a service ace by De Los Santos. That inched the visitors to within six points at 18-12. After Hostos scored three of the next four to take a 21-13 edge, the Broncos continued to battle, scoring three straight points via a kill and two service aces by Pamela Sierra. The Caimans responded well, however, notching four of the next five points to take the set, 25-17. Rodriguez registered two kills during that latter spurt, with Harris adding one.

In the third set, the Caimans held an 18-12 advantage, but four consecutive Hostos errors brought the Broncos to within two at 18-16. The Caimans once again responded, just as they did in the late stages of the second set, as Hostos finished the set on a 7-2 run to capture it, 25-18, and take a 2-1 advantage in sets for the match.

Trailing 16-15 in the fourth set, the Broncos put together a 6-0 run to take a commanding 21-16 edge. That run was highlighted by a Ramos kill, as well as a pair of service aces by Pamela Sierra. The Caimans would then score four straight, thanks to two kills by Rodriguez, one by Colon, and a service ace by Camejo. That inched the hosts to within one (21-20), prompting a Bronx timeout.

The end of the fourth set (and the match) would see the teams deadlocked at scores of 22-22, 23-23, 24-24, and 25-25, before the Caimans scored the final two points of the set to win it, 27-25, and capture the match, 3-1.

For the evening, Hostos hit .116 (34-19-129), while the Broncos earned a hitting percentage of .103 (24-15-87). The Caimans held a 27-14 advantage in service aces, and Bronx earned 53 digs compared to 47 for the hosts.

The Broncos will return to the court on Thursday evening, as Bronx will play its home opener against the Panthers of the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:00pm.
