Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Newcomer Junior Tchankwe (two goals, one assist) paces Broncos to season-opening 4-1 win over Red Hawks

The Broncos' men's soccer team started its 2024 campaign on Saturday afternoon with an impressive victory, turning back the Red Hawks of LaGuardia by a score of 4-1 at Ohio Field in CUNYAC action. The match served as the season-opener for both squads, and was played under humid and cloudy conditions.

Bronx wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard, as newcomer Junior Tchankwe tapped home Julien Sossa's pass just 4:24 into the match to give the Broncos a 1-0 advantage. That aforementioned 1-0 score would hold steady until the closing seconds of the half, when Broncos veteran Ashraf Abubakar would score on a breakaway to put Bronx ahead 2-0.

Later, at 61:05, the Broncos tacked on a third goal when sophomore Mohammed Ali would slice home a feed from Tchankwe. Tchankwe would score his second goal of the game later at the 80:10 mark, scoring an unassisted goal to increased Bronx's commanding edge to 4-0.

LaGuardia was able to get on the board in the latter stages of the contest, when Daoudra Traroe converted on a penalty kick to break up the Broncos' shutout bid. That would be the final goal scored by either side on the afternoon, with Bronx holding on for a 4-1 victory.

The Broncos won the game by three goals despite being outshot 19-18 by the Red Hawks. Bronx goalkeeper Edwin Martinez made three saves in picking up the victory in net, while his counterpart, LaGuardia's Yossef Elmenshawy, stopped two shots in taking the loss.

Bronx will look to make it two consecutive victories to start the season when it returns to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon, September 10, to take on CUNYAC foe BMCC. The contest takes place at Pier 40 in New York, NY, with start-time scheduled for 12:30pm.
