Broncos drop CUNYAC match to Panthers, 7-1; Veteran Ashraf Abubakar scores goal despite defeat

Playing for the first time since August 31, the Broncos' men's soccer team suffered a CUNYAC defeat on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Panthers of the Borough of Manhattan Community College by a score of 7-1. The clash took place at Pier 40 in New York, NY. With the loss, Bronx is now 1-1 on the 2024 campaign (1-1 CUNYAC), while the Panthers improved to 1-1 (1-0 CUNYAC).

BMCC imposed its will early on offense, netting three goals inside the opening 25 minutes of action. Panthers standout Clovens Loussaint scored a goal one minute into the contest (from Nikola Ivkovic), then blasted home another two minutes later off a pass from Idrissa Sanogo. The Panthers increased their lead to 3-0 in the 24th minute when Salim Anas tapped home Loussaint's feed. Those aforementioned goals would highlight the scoring for a half in which the Panthers held a commanding 16-1 edge in shot attempts.

The Broncos got on the board in the 56th minute when veteran Ashraf Abubakar capitalized on a beautiful lead pass from Julien Sossa before blasting the ball into the net to cut his team's deficit to 3-1. BMCC responded with four goals over a span of 17 minutes, with Brandon Leon (64th minute, from Loussaint), Sebastien George (74th minute, from Assay Mouhamadou Ndi), Loussaint again (76th minute from Leon), and Anderson Alfaro (81st minute, unassisted) finding the back of the net. At that juncture of the CUNYAC clash, the hosts held a 7-1 edge, and would eventually advance to victory by that same score.

BMCC held a dominant 26-7 advantage in shots, while also earning 12 corner kick opportunities compared to three for Bronx. The Panthers were whistled for 14 fouls on the afternoon, with the Broncos guilty of 13.

Broncos goalkeeper Edwin Martinez made four saves despite taking the loss in net for the visitors. Panthers netminder El Momar Coundoul picked up the victory between the pipes, collecting two saves.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday afternoon, as the Broncos travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on the Kingsborough Community College Wave in another CUNYAC contest. Start-time is scheduled for 5:00pm.
