Broncos struggle offensively in losses to Union County College Owls, BMCC Panthers

The Bronx Community College men's basketball team dropped a pair of games in recent days, falling to the Owls of Union County College by a score of 108-56 this past Tuesday in Cranford, NJ, and losing to CUNYAC foe Borough of Manhattan Community College, 64-44 last night. With the two defeats, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 3-23 on the 2023-2024 campaign. Union improved to 14-9 with Tuesday's victory, and the Panthers are now 10-15 (6-4 CUNYAC).

Despite Bronx's loss to Union, the Broncos were paced by sophomore Herbert Gary, as he narrowly missed registering another double-double, scoring a team-high 11 points while snatching nine rebounds and dishing three assists. Sharpshooter Matthew Candelaria connected on three triples, finishing with nine points, three boards, three dimes, and two steals, and Taijay Good finished with eight points. Finally, it was Abraham Richter scoring eight points and pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds.

Two days later in Bronx's loss to the Panthers of BMCC, Good led all Broncos with 13 points while also collecting four rebounds. Freshman Daniel Armstrong scored 11 points while snatching three boards, and Gary finished with eight points, a team-high 12 rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

For the Panthers of BMCC, Ysaia Marte led the way, scoring a game-high 19 points while collecting five rebounds, dishing two assists, and tallying two steals, and Jayden Jarrett posted a double-double, netting 15 points, snatching a game-high 14 rebounds, leading all players with four assists, and tallying two steals. Finally, it was Khalil Black and Emmaniel Ageyi contributing eight points apiece.

The contest between the two CUNYAC foes remained close for a short period of time, with the Panthers holding a slim 11-9 advantage with 13:39 remaining in the first half. BMCC then then turned up the voltage, outscoring the Broncos 16-6 for the remainder of the session while holding Bronx to just one field goal during that span. The Panthers led the Broncos 27-15 at the break.

The Panthers built their lead up to 15 points (38-23) with 14:12 remaining in the game, but a 6-0 Bronx run kept the Broncos within striking distance, as they sliced their deficit to nine, 38-29, with 11:25 to go in the contest. Richter, Good, and Armstrong each scored a basket during that aforementioned run.

BMCC later led 43-33 with 9:32 remaining, before finishing strong, outscoring Bronx 21-11 the rest of the way to account for the 20-point margin of victory (64-44).

Bronx will wrap up its 2023-2024 campaign on Tuesday, February 20, as the Broncos will host the Falcons of Dutchess Community College. Start time at the Alumni Gymnasium is scheduled for 7:00pm.
