Broncos drop second game to Express in a five day span, falling to Monroe College-Bronx 76-62

For the second time in five days, the Express of Monroe College-Bronx defeated Bronx Community College, downing the Broncos by a score of 76-62. The game took place at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium in Throggs Neck, NY. With the loss, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 3-21, while the Express won their fifth straight game, improving to 15-9.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, sophomore Herbert Gary posted yet another double-double, scoring 20 points while snatching a game-high 19 rebounds, and tying for the game-highs of four steals and two blocked shots. Freshman Abraham Richter also notched a double-double, as he scored 11 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, and Matthew Candelaria finalized his afternoon with 11 points. Finally, it was Taijay Good finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, and a team-high four assists.

Monroe College-Bronx was paced by Jovan Young, as he 21 points (7-13 FG) led all players. He also grabbed five rebounds while tallying two assists. Vashaun Wallace contributed nine points, a game-high seven assists, and three rebounds, and Derrick Simpson scored eight points. Finally, it was Abubakar Kromah pulling down a team-high 13 rebounds.

The Broncos kept the game respectable early on, trailing by just nine points, 24-15, with 7:02 remaining in the opening half. Monroe College-Bronx then put together a 6-0 run, started by a Jaream Eason jumper and capped by a converted layup by Anthony Bannister. That put the Express ahead 30-15 with 4:54 left on the first half clock. Monroe College-Bronx maintained that 15-point advantage, eventually taking a 37-22 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Broncos trailed 64-47 with 4:37 remaining, but Bronx refused to quit. The Broncos scored eight consecutive points over a span of 2:43 to pull to within nine, 64-55, with 1:54 to go. That would be the closest Bronx would get, however, as the Express connected on 12 of its 16 free throw attempts down the stretch to solidify the home victory.

Monroe College-Bronx earned a conversion rate of 40.6 percent for the afternoon (26-64), while the Broncos hit on just 22 of their 70 attempts (31.4 percent). Bronx held a 51-47 edge on the glass, but the Express held an 18-11 advantage in assists. Monroe College-Bronx held a slim 11-10 edge in steals, and the Express won the turnover battle, committing 14 miscues, while the Broncos finished with 17.

The Broncos return to action on Tuesday evening, as Bronx will travel to Cranford, NJ to take on Union College. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
