Broncos defeated by Caimans in CUNYAC action; Five sophomores honored in pregame ceremony

The Broncos' men's basketball team lost a CUNYAC game on Thursday evening, falling to the Caimans of Hostos Community College by a score of 108-72. The contest took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 3-20 on the 2023-2024 campaign (2-7 CUNYAC), while Hostos improved to 14-8 (8-1 CUNYAC).

Prior to the game, five Bronx sophomores, including Matthew Candelaria, Herbert Gary, Dominique Norman, Taijay Good, and Damien Sanchez were honored in a special ceremony, as the Bronx Community College Department of Athletics saluted their two-year tenures as members of the institution's men's basketball program. Head Coach Warren Thompson said some heartfelt words about his sophomores, and they were all presented with Letterman jackets, as well as numerous other commemorative gifts.

Leading the way for the Broncos in the game was Good, as he scored a game-high 33 points (12-27 FG, 4-5 FT). He also collected six rebounds, tied for the game-high of five assists, and led all players with four steals. Matthew Candelaria connected on three triples, finishing with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals, and Herbert Gary notched yet another double-double, scoring 10 points while snatching a game-high 13 boards.

For Hostos, the Caimans were paced by Molly Metmetaj, as he drained five trifectas, finishing with a team-high 17 points. Tyrese Conway contributed 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three swatted shots, and Justin Umunakwe netted 11 points while collecting six rebounds and adding three blocks. TeAmo Ebron posted a double-double with 10 points, a team-high 10 rebounds, and five assists, and finally, it was Anthony Henderson finalizing his evening with 10 points and three boards.

In the opening half, the CUNYAC foes exchanged the lead nine times, with the last of those pendulum swings coming when Francis Garcia converted on a layup to put the Caimans up 26-25 with 3:16 remaining in the first half. That bucket began a run of 13 consecutive Hostos points over a span of 2:40, catapulting the Caimans to a lead of 37-25. The Caimans held a 39-27 advantage as time expired on the first half.

With 13:36 remaining in the game, Hostos went up by 20 (60-40), and never led by any less than 20 points for the remainder of the game. The Caimans led by as many as 37 points, before winning the game by 36.

Hostos was the far more efficient squad shooting the basketball, as the Caimans knocked down 41 of their 93 shot attempts (44.1 percent). On the flip side, the Broncos struggled, earning a conversion rate of just 32.5 percent (26-80). The Caimans dominated the glass, out-rebounding Bronx 65-52, and Hostos also held a 28-16 edge in assists. The Caimans swatted a whopping 14 shots on the night to Bronx's seven, and Hostos won the turnover battle, committing 16 miscues, while the Broncos had 24.

With this evening's loss, the Broncos were officially eliminated from CUNYAC postseason contention. Still, Bronx has four games remaining in its 2023-2024 season, and the Broncos will look to finish strong. Next up on the schedule for the Broncos is Monroe College-Bronx. The game will take place at Monsignor Scanlan High School, with a start-time of 3:30pm.
