Monroe University-Bronx's offensive barrage overwhelms Broncos at Monsignor Scanlan Gymnasium

The Broncos' women's basketball team dropped a Region XV contest on Thursday evening, falling to the Express of Monroe University-Bronx by a score of 113-39. The game took place at Monsignor Scanlan Gym in Throggs Neck, NY. With the defeat, the Broncos are now 2-5 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Express improved to a mark of 10-3.

Despite the loss for Bronx, freshman guard Ana Matos registered team-highs of 11 points (7-10 FT) and six steals, while also collecting three rebounds. Taylar Hill converted on all four of her free throw attempts, finishing with 10 points and four boards, and Yahannis Martinez added eight points, eight rebounds, a pair of assists, and two steals.

Five players scored in double figures for Monroe University-Bronx, including Beverly Williams, as she nearly registered a triple-double, posting game-highs of 20 points, 11 rebounds, and nine steals. She also snatched six rebounds, as well. Tymere Moorer finished with 17 points, five rebounds, and five steals, and Makira Bunsie registered a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tiffany Newsome contributed 15 points, nine boards, five steals, and four dimes, and Salimah Williams finalized her evening with 13 points, seven rebounds, seven steals, and five assists.

Trailing 6-0 in the opening 1:33 of the contest, the Broncos rattled off five consecutive points, courtesy of a converted fastbreak layup by Matos, and a drained triple by Hill. It was all Monroe University-Bronx from there, though. A 10-0 run by the hosts over a span of 3:31 put the Express ahead 16-5, and Monroe University-Bronx continued to gradually add to its lead, capping the quarter with a buzzer-beating trifecta by Williams to take a 30-13 edge after 10 minutes of action.

The Express used the middle quarters to establish its dominance, outscoring the Broncos 36-7 in the second to take a 66-20 advantage at halftime, before netting 31 points to the Broncos' 10 in the third to snatch a commanding 97-30 edge after three. Monroe University-Bronx eventually went on to win the game by 74 points (113-39).

Monroe University-Bronx converted on 42.2 percent of its attempts from the floor (46-109), while also knocking down 65 percent of its attempts from the free throw line (13-20). The Broncos hit just 10 shots on the evening (10-44, 22.7 percent conversion rate), but Bronx was very efficient at the free throw line, connecting on 73.9 percent of its attempts there (17-23). The Express held a commanding 66-37 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle by a huge margin, committing 29 miscues to the Broncos' 62. Monroe University-Bronx also held edges in steals (37-15) and assists (27-6), and each team had three blocked shots.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx will travel to Bayside, NY to take on the Tigers of Queensborough Community College. Start-time at the RFK Gymnasium is scheduled for 12:00pm.
