Broncos stage impressive second half rally, still fall to Express, 71-65; Richter notches double-double despite defeat

The Broncos' men's basketball team dropped a Region XV contest on Thursday evening, falling to the Express of Monroe University-Bronx by a score of 71-65. The game took place at Monsignor Scanlan Gym in Throggs Neck, NY. With the defeat, the Broncos are now 1-8 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Express improved to a mark of 8-3.

Despite the loss for Bronx, sophomore Abraham Richter registered a double-double, posting game-highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds. James Wenzel contributed nine points, three steals, and three boards, and newcomer Alexander Hattel finalized his evening with eight points, a game-high seven steals, and five rebounds. Kevin Soto and Alexander Romero recorded eight points apiece for the visitors, as well.

Dimitre Alston was sensational for Monroe University-Bronx in the Express' victory, as he scored a game-high 22 points (6-10 FG, 9-14 FT) while collecting five rebounds, and dishing four assists. David Malone posted a double-double with 15 points and game-highs of 17 rebounds and three blocks. He also sprinkled in three steals and three assists. Malike Smart added 10 points and six rebounds, and Jayquan Lee and Paolo Avvento each contributed eight points and seven rebounds, with Lee's seven assists leading all players.

The Express held a 15-point advantage at halftime (42-27), but the Broncos rallied to tie the game at 60 apiece with 5:55 to go in the game. After each team executed a successful jump shot, Monroe University-Bronx recorded the next three points to go up 65-62, but Richter's clutch triple tied the game at 65-all.
 
A few possessions later, Monroe University–Bronx got the ball back with less than two minutes remaining. Avvento converted a layup off the fast break to give his team a 67-65 edge with 1:39 left in regulation. 
 
The Broncos had a chance to tie the game, but Avvento forced a steal and found Lee who buried the layup to give the Express a modest cushion at 69-65 with 45 seconds to go. Monroe University-Bronx got another stop before converting on two free throws in the closing seconds to clinch the Region XV victory, 71-65.

Monroe University-Bronx converted on 45.9 percent of its attempts from the floor (28-61), while also knocking down 61.9 percent of its attempts from the free throw line (13-21). The Broncos earned just a 30.5 conversion rate from the floor (25-82), but Bronx was very efficient at the free throw line, connecting on 69.2 percent of its attempts there (9-13). The Express held a commanding 56-39 edge on the glass, while also holing edges in steals (21-11) and blocked shots (6-5). The Broncos swiped 24 steals compared to 11 for the hosts, and Bronx took care of the basketball well, committing just 15 turnovers on the evening, compared to Monroe University-Bronx's 32.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx will travel to Bayside, NY to take on the Tigers of Queensborough Community College. Start-time at the RFK Gymnasium is scheduled for 2:00pm.
