Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Broncos edged by Red Hawks, 66-64, in classic CUNY Community College Conference tilt at Alumni Gym

The Broncos' women's basketball team suffered a tough loss on Tuesday evening, getting edged by the Red Hawks of LaGuardia Community College by a score of 66-64. The game took place at the Alumni Gymnasium in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 3-6 on the 2024-2025 campaign (1-3 CUNY C.C.C.), while the Red Hawks improved to a mark of 5-5 (3-4 CUNY C.C.C.).

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Ana Matos continued her stellar freshman campaign for Bronx, registering her third double-double of the season, and third game of 20 points or more, netting a game-high 23 points while posting a team-high 11 rebounds, tying for the game-high of five assists, and sprinkling in two steals. Taylar Hill drained five triples, scoring 18 points, collecting five rebounds, dishing two assists, and adding two steals, and Yahannis Martinez finalized her versatile evening with 14 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

The Red Hawks were paced by Renayah Fernandez's team-best 20 points. She also grabbed nine rebounds and tallied three steals. Aniyah Williams finished with 19 points, a game-high eight steals, and six rebounds. She also tied for the game-high of five assists. Meniia Weeks registered a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and a game-high 10 blocks, and Moutiatou Djibring's finalized her evening with eight points, a game-high 19 rebounds, and four swatted shots.

In what was a very entertaining game from start to finish, the Broncos looked like they might run away with the game early, racing out to a 10-0 advantage in the opening 3:26 thanks to four points apiece from Matos and Martinez, and a bucket by Reyes. The Red Hawks answered by putting together a 15-4 run over a span of 3:59 to snatch a 15-14 edge. Weeks led LaGuardia during that aforementioned charge with five points. Only two points were scored in the final 2:35 of the period – a layup by Matos. Bronx led 16-15 after 10 minutes of action.

Trailing 21-20 with 5:29 left in the half, LaGuardia rattled off seven straight points to take a six-point edge (27-21). The Red Hawks eventually went up by nine (31-22) before Bronx closed out the half scoring five consecutive points, including a drained triple by Hill, and a buzzer-beating jumper by Matos. At the half, the Broncos trailed 31-27.

In the third quarter, the teams exchanged leads five times, and neither CUNY squad took more than a four-point edge at any point. With the teams knotted at 44-all inside the final five seconds, Matos split a pair of freebees to put the hosts ahead 45-44 as time expired on the period.

With 6:31 remaining in the fourth, Hill converted on a trifecta to put Bronx ahead 56-49, and it appeared as the Broncos were on the cusp of putting some distance between themselves and the Red Hawks, but LaGuardia refused to go down quietly. The Red Hawks used an 11-4 run over a span of 4:13 to tie the game at 60 apiece. The tail-end of that run for the Red Hawks featured consecutive buckets by Aniyah Williams.

Later, with the game tied at 62 apiece, Matos finished off a fastbreak opportunity by converting on a layup to put the hosts ahead 64-62 with 1:12 left. 17 seconds later, Meeks earned a bucket to tie the game at 64 apiece with 55 seconds remaining.

Matos had an opportunity to register the potential game-winning bucket, just as she against Queensborough, as she had the ball in her hands with six seconds remaining, but misfired on a jumper. The ball was rebounded by Williams, who swung the ball to Fernandez. Fernandez proceeded to take the ball coast-to-coast and lay it home with 0.2 seconds left, essentially winning the game for the Red Hawks.

LaGuardia was more efficient shooting the basketball, connecting on 41.2 percent of its shots on the evening (28-68), while the Broncos hit on just 26 of 82 attempts (31.7 percent). The CUNY rivals both shot below 50 percent from the free throw line (Red Hawks went 9-20, shooting 45 percent, while the Broncos drilled five of 11 attempts, good for 45.5 percent). LaGuardia held a slim 53-49 edge on the glass, while also swiping 14 steals to Bronx's 13. The Broncos won the turnover battle, committing just 19 turnovers, while the Red Hawks finished with 29. Both teams dished 13 assists on the evening.

The Broncos will now have a long break before returning to the court on Tuesday, January 7, as Bronx will have another crack at the Red Hawks. The teams will rematch at LaGuardia in Long Island City, NY, with the start-time for the CUNY clash scheduled for 6:00pm.
