Women's basketball defeated by Hostos in borough clash at Alumni Gymnasium

The Broncos' women's basketball team lost its home opener Thursday evening at the Alumni Gymnasium, falling to the Caimans of Hostos Community College by a score of 99-40. The contest served as Bronx's homecoming game for the 2024-2025 campaign. With the defeat, the Broncos are now 1-1 on the season, while Hostos improved to 3-0.

Despite the loss for Bronx, newcomer Ana Matos led the way for her squad, scoring a team-high 19 points while snatching eight rebounds, registering three assists, tallying three steals, and swatting a pair of shots. Veteran Katherine Reyes swiped a team-high seven steals while also contributing nine points and for rebounds, and Taylar Hill finalized her evening with eight points and four boards. Finally, it was Angelina Martinez pulling down a team-best nine boards.

Five players scored in double figures for the Caimans, including Daja Huggins who finished with a game-high 22 points (7-12 FG). She also grabbed six rebounds and swiped five steals. Aniyah Robinson contributed 21 points, a game-high 16 rebounds, and two blocks, and Kiara Huggins has a nice all-around game, netting 20 points, grabbing eight caroms, registering a game-high eight steals, and dishing six assists. Finally, it was Shelby McGill and Joazi Vasquez scoring 14 and 12 points, respectively.

The Broncos kept the game close in the opening six minutes of the opening quarter. Trailing 12-5, Bronx pulled to within three following consecutive buckets by Ana Matos and Katherine Reyes. It was all Caimans after that, however. Hostos finished the quarter on a 14-0 run that spanned 4:59, snatching a 26-9 advantage after 10 minutes of play.

The Caimans used the momentum they gained during the latter stages of the first quarter and continued to build their commanding edge, outscoring Bronx 50-12 over the next two quarters to grab a 74-21 edge heading into the fourth. The Broncos, despite trailing big, put forth a solid effort in the fourth. Matos scored 15 of her team-leading 19 in the period, a quarter that saw the visitors outscore the hosts 23-19 to account for the 59-point win.

For the evening, the Caimans earned a 44 percent conversion rate (37-84) compared to a 28.3 shooting percentage for Bronx (15-53). Hostos held a 57-38 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues compared to 42 for the Broncos. Finally, it was the Caimans doubling-up Bronx in assists (20-10).

The Broncos will now have four days off before returning to the hardwood on Tuesday, as Bronx will take on the Lions of Nassau Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
