Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Broncos outlasted by Lions despite gritty effort, 58-54, in Garden City, NY

The Broncos' women's basketball team suffered a tough defeat on Tuesday evening, falling to the Lions of Nassau Community College by a score of 58-54. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to 1-2 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Lions improved to a mark of 3-0.

Despite the loss, Ana Matos led Bronx with a team-best 16 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds and tied for the game-high of five steals before leaving the game after 19 minutes with an injury. Angelina Gonzalez contributed 13 points, five boards, a game-high four assists, and three steals, and Yahannis Martinez posted a double-double with 12 points, a team-high 12 rebounds, and three assists. Finally, it was Taylar Hill finalizing her evening with 12 points, three steals, and two caroms.

Pacing the Lions was Taylah Farquharson, as she scored a game-high 20 points (8-16 FG) to go along with six rebounds and four steals. Kirina Azemar netted 15 points, and Destiny Jackson posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 19 boards. Finally, it was Janell San Jose finishing with seven points, 13 rebounds, and five steals.

With the contest knotted at four apiece early in the first quarter, the Broncos used a fastbreak layup by Gonzalez and a converted trifecta by Hill to snatch a 9-4 advantage. Nassau responded by finishing the final four minutes of the quarter with 12 consecutive points to catapult ahead 16-9 after 10 minutes of play. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Farquharson's six points.

Farquharson drained a layup just 16 seconds into the second quarter, and a pair of Samantha Marshall freebees gave the Lions a double-digit edge, 20-9. The momentum took a turn there, however, as Bronx went on a ferocious 20-2 run over a span of 7:49 to take a seven-point lead (29-22) with 61 seconds remaining in the session.  Matos' 12 points during that push led the Broncos' charge. Nassau scored the final four points of the quarter, but Bronx still held a three-point advantage (29-26) heading into the locker room.

The Broncos led 34-28 53 seconds into the third quarter, but a 7-1 Lions spurt knotted the game at 35-all. After Kirina Azemar converted on a free throw to put the hosts ahead 36-35, the squads would exchange the lead four times over the ensuing 2:27, with the latter of those pendulum swings coming when Farquharson converted on a layup to give Nassau a 40-39 lead. The teams would score two more points apiece for the remainder of the period, as the Lions held a slim 42-41 edge after 30 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter, Nassau's San Jose converted on a jumper to give the Lions a 48-43 advantage with 8:29 to go, but on the Broncos' ensuing trip down the court, Hill drained a triple to bring Bronx to within two (48-46). Later, the Lions led 48-47 with 7:38 left, and the Broncos went the next 5:42 draining just one basket, as Nassau held a 55-49 advantage with 1:57 remaining.

Following a Broncos timeout, Hill drilled a trifecta to pull Bronx to within three, 55-52. The Broncos stayed within striking distance, trailing the hosts 58-54 with 18 seconds remaining, but a turnover by Alexandra Peguero with eight seconds remaining sealed the contest, as Nassau held on for a 58-54 victory.

Neither squad shot well from the floor, with the Broncos earning just a 36.7 percent conversion rate (22-60), and the Lions shooting 34.9 percent from the hardwood (22-63). Nassau misfired on 15 free throws (13-28, 46.4 percent), while Bronx missed nine freebees (6-15, 40 percent). The Lions held a commanding 51-39 edge on the glass, but the Broncos swiped 37 steals to the Lions' 34. Bronx won the turnover battle by a slim margin, committing 34 miscues to the hosts' 36, and the teams registered 10 assists apiece.

Bronx will look to bounce back on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will welcome the Kingsborough Wave to the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
