Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite valiant effort, men's basketball drops homecoming game to Caimans

The Broncos' men's basketball team lost its home opener Thursday evening at the Alumni Gymnasium, falling to the Caimans of Hostos Community College by a score of 88-62. The contest served as Bronx's homecoming game for the 2024-2025 campaign. With the defeat, the Broncos are now 0-2 on the season, while Hostos improved to 4-0.

Pacing Bronx in its defeat was veteran James Wenzel, as he scored a game-high 16 points (5-11 FG, 5-6 FT) to go along with four rebounds, a game-high five assists, a pair of blocks, and two steals. Alexander Romero knocked down three shots from downtown to finalize his evening with nine points, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, and Kevin Soto added eight points. Freshman Alexander Hattel scoring seven points, snatching four boards, dishing four assists, blocking three shots, and tallying two steals, and Abraham Richter's 11 boards were a game-high.

Hostos' Tyrese Conway was sensational all evening for the visitors, as he poured in a game-high 32 points, knocking down six shots from downtown and 11 of 22 overall. His nine rebounds were also a team-high, and he led all players with six steals. Harry Bonilla finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals, and Jadyn Lopez finalized his evening with nine points and four boards.

In front of a packed Alumni Gymnasium, the Broncos scored a pair of buckets in the opening minute, one apiece by newcomers Matayus Kola and Andi Metaliaj, to snatch a 4-0 advantage. Later, with Bronx down 9-6, consecutive jumpers by Soto and Metaliaj put the Broncos back ahead, 10-9. The Caimans then responded with a 15-0 run over a span of 6:25 to take a commanding 24-10 lead. That aforementioned run was a balanced one for Hostos, with six different players contributing points, led by Lopez's four.

Hostos continued to gradually build its lead following that 15-0 spurt, outscoring the Broncos 15-8 for the remainder of the half to take a 39-18 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, with 16:24 remaining, Bronx found itself trailing by 21, 45-24, before making one last push. The Broncos rattled off nine consecutive points over a span of 1:55, courtesy of a basket by Soto, a converted trifecta by Romeo, and one hoop apiece by Hattel and Wenzel. That pulled the hosts to within 12, 45-33, with 14:39 remaining.

Hostos' Conway took over the game from there. Over the ensuing 5:24 of action, the standout drained five shots from long range, scoring 17 points overall and providing the spark for what would be 25-14 Caimans run. Hostos led 70-47 at that juncture, and never led by any less than 17 points the rest of the way, eventually winning the game by 26 (88-62).

For the game, Hostos shot 41.3 percent (31-75) compared to a 34.8 percent conversion rate for Bronx (23-66). The Caimans held a slim 51-46 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues compared to 33 for Bronx. The Caimans held a 22-13 advantage in steals, but the Broncos held a sizable 12-7 edge in swatted shots.

The Broncos will now have four days off before returning to the hardwood on Tuesday, as Bronx will take on the Lions of Nassau Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
