Nassau's offense erupts in second half as Lions register convincing victory over Broncos

The Broncos' men's basketball team suffered a loss on Tuesday evening, falling to the Lions of Nassau Community College by a score of 99-55. With the defeat, Bronx dipped to 0-3 on the 2024-2025 campaign, while the Lions improved to a mark of 4-0.

Despite the loss for Bronx, veterans Abraham Richter and James Wenzel tied for the team-high of 13 points. Richter also added seven rebounds and a pair of blocks, while Wenzel contributed a team-high four steals, a game-high three swatted shots, three rebounds, and two assists. Newcomer Alexander Hattel finished with nine points, seven boards, and four assists, and Matayus Kola finalized his evening with seven points, six rebounds, and two dimes.

Nassau's Sean Walsh scored a game-high 23 points (9-12 FG) while also registering five assists, swiping five steals, and pulling down a pair of boards. Donte Howard netted 21 points and posted game-highs of seven assists and seven steals while collecting four boards. Isaiah Lariosa finalized his night with 17 points, five steals, five rebounds, and four assists, and Nicholas Bologna narrowly missed a double-double, netting eight points and pulling down nine rebounds.

In what was a very tightly-contested opening half, the largest lead either team held over the first 19 minutes was a five-point edge, courtesy of the Broncos, who led the Lions 10-5 just 4:19 into the action. The momentum and the complexion of the game changed following Wenzel's two converted freebees with 2:07 remaining in the half. Those made shots put Bronx up 30-28, but the Lions would dominate the remainder of the game. Nassau closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 36-30 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Lions scored the first five points of the second half, making it a 13-0 run dating back to the latter portion of the opening stanza. Up 41-30 at that point, Nassau would outscore the Broncos 58-25 the rest of the way to account for the dominant 44-point victory. After connecting on just 13 attempts in the opening 20 minutes of play, the Lions shot just under a shade of 56 percent (25-55, 55.7 percent) in the second to run away from the Broncos.

Nassau was the much more efficient team shooting the basketball, as the Lions converted on 48.1 percent of their attempts from the floor (38-79) while the Broncos hit on just 20 of 55 shots (36.4 percent). Nassau held a modest 47-39 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 18 miscues while Bronx had 34. The Lions held edges in steals (24-9) and assists (21-11), and the Broncos swatted three shots compared to zero for Nassau.

Bronx will look to bounce back on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will welcome the Kingsborough Wave to the Alumni Gymnasium. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
